Liverpool right-back Jeremie Frimpong has returned to training ahead of the Reds’ Premier League clash with Burnley, while Alexander Isak has also been seen on the Kirkby practice pitches for the first time.

Arne Slot’s side boast the only perfect Premier League record after three games of the 2025-26 season, kicking off their title defence with three straight wins over Bournemouth, Newcastle United and Arsenal.

Liverpool’s 1-0 success over the latter on August 31 saw them open up a two-point lead over Chelsea at the top of the Premier League standings, as Dominik Szoboszlai curled home an astounding free kick in front of the Kop.

The Hungarian once again occupied a makeshift right-back role in that victory over the Gunners, filling in for new signing Frimpong due to the Dutchman’s hamstring injury.

The former Bayer Leverkusen defender sustained the problem against Bournemouth on the opening day of the season, although he avoided a serious issue and was only expected to be out for a few weeks at the most.

Frimpong was unsurprisingly omitted from the Netherlands’ squad for their World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Poland and Lithuania, but he is seemingly on course to be fit for the trip to Turf Moor on Sunday.

Liverpool recently released a batch of images from Wednesday’s training session, and Frimpong was seen working with the ball at his feet with his teammates, appearing in customary high spirits while doing so.

Head coach Slot should confirm Frimpong’s availability in his pre-match press conference, but the Bundesliga Invincible is looking good for a return on Sunday, potentially giving his compatriot a dilemma after Szoboszlai’s exemplary displays at right-back.

As well as Frimpong returning to the AXA training pitches, new record signing Isak took part in his first training session since his £125m deadline day move from Newcastle United, having recently completed international duty with Sweden.

The 25-year-old made his first appearance of the season in his nation’s 2-0 loss to Kosovo in World Cup Qualifying on Monday, replacing Anthony Elanga for the final 18 minutes of the encounter.

It was not at all certain that Isak would even turn out for Sweden this month, as the former Real Sociedad striker did not have any sort of pre-season with Newcastle amid the whirlwind transfer saga and a supposed minor thigh injury.

Isak’s 18-minute cameo off the bench against Kosovo represented his first appearance since May 25 – Newcastle’s final-day loss to Everton in the 2024-25 Premier League – and he is ostensibly still far from peak fitness.

As a result, there is next to no chance of the Scandinavian being thrown into the first XI when the Reds meet Burnley this weekend, but travelling fans may catch a glimpse of their new record signing in action as a late substitute.

Instead, Slot should stick with the established quartet of Hugo Ekitike, Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Florian Wirtz from the off, and a six-time Liverpool trophy winner believes that the latter needs to display one particular quality to be successful at Anfield following a slow start.
