Fabrizio Romano: Arsenal Want to Sign ‘Elite’ Star Instead of Xavi Simons

Arsenal still have an interest in RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons even though Chelsea are now in advanced talks for the Dutch playmaker, but Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze is ‘higher’ on their wanted list, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Gunners have been linked with both players in recent weeks as Mikel Arteta looks to bring in some senior competition for Martin Odegaard, although the Blues look to have stolen a march on them with regard to the Dutchman.

Talks are progressing between Simons and the London club over a transfer to Stamford Bridge.

Eze ‘Higher’ on Arsenal’s List Than Simons

The Gunners are interested in both players

The Gunners have had a busy summer so far with Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres set to become their latest arrival, following the additions of Cristhian Mosquera, Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, Kepa and Christian Norgaard.

Arteta is still looking to make at least one more signing in attack though, with Romano confirming interest in both Eze and the ‘elite’ Simons – although the north London outfit do have a clear preference.

Asked if Arsenal are still in the race to sign Simons, Fabrizio Romano wrote in his exclusive GIVEMESPORT newsletter:

Yes, but Eze is higher on their list and Simons is currently in advanced talks with Chelsea.

Eze ‘Tells Friends He’s Joining’ Arsenal

Crystal Palace star expects Emirates move

While Arsenal have him in their sights, Eze himself seems confident that he will be wearing the red shirt by the end of the summer transfer window.

According to reports, the 27-year-old Greenwich-born star has told friends that he is moving across London and signing for the Gunners in the coming weeks.

Given he is proven in the Premier League over a number of seasons with Palace – compared to Simons who may need some time to adapt to English football – Eze could be a smart purchase for Arteta as he looks to finally go one better than in recent seasons and win the title.

The price will be the biggest sticking point, with the Eagles determined to get the full amount of Eze’s release clause – worth up to £68m including add-ons.
