Liverpool FC 10 most expensive transfers of all time

Liverpool’s recent ambition was made clear by signing three of their four most expensive signings ever in the summer transfer window.

 

The Premier League champions have shown real intent since winning the title, bringing in Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike for record-breaking fees, among others.

 

The question is, where do the trio feature among Liverpool’s most expensive signings of all time?

10. Diogo Jota – £45m – 2020

Diogo Jota‘s tragic death in July has left a gaping void at Liverpool, but he will never be forgotten.

 

The Portuguese added immediate attacking quality when he joined from Wolves in 2020, scoring on his debut at Anfield.

 

Jota continued to be an invaluable figure in the five years that followed, often popping up in big moments.

 

His ruthless, and vital, winning goal at home to Everton was his final strike for Liverpool – a typically priceless contribution.

 

 

 

9. Luis Diaz – £50m – 2022

Luis Diaz‘s time at Liverpool came to an end in 2025, with his £50 million move to Bayern Munich making him the club’s eighth most expensive sale in history.

 

The Colombian made a superb start at Anfield, injecting life into the 2021/22 season and acting as a catalyst for the Reds’ quadruple push.

 

While a knee injury arguably meant Diaz was never quite the same player soon after, he was always a key starter, combining tenacity and technical quality.

 

Liverpool sought to capitalise on Bayern Munich‘s willingness to pay a sizeable fee, but he will always be appreciated for the part that he played in the title win, scoring 17 goals in all competitions.

 

 

 

8. Naby Keita – £52.75m – 2018

So much was expected of Naby Keita when he arrived from RB Leipzig in 2018, but he never got going in a Liverpool shirt.

 

He showed flashes of his potential, only for constant injuries and patchy performances to thwart him.

 

Some thought Keita may have a similar influence to Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, but he flattered to deceive.

 

Now 30, he has struggled since leaving Liverpool in 2023, most recently going out on loan to Ferencvaros from Werder Bremen.

 

 

 

7. Dominik Szoboszlai – £60.1m – 2023

Dominik Szoboszlai was part of an exciting summer of midfield additions in 2023, arriving alongside Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo.

 

The Hungarian can divide opinion at times, but there is no question that he has justified the £60.1 million Liverpool paid for him when they triggered his release clause.

 

Szoboszlai’s energy levels are arguably unmatched in the Reds’ squad, and he has impressed with his versatility. Still only 24, we are yet to see his peak.

In terms of game-changing signings in Liverpool’s history, few have been bigger than Alisson.

 



 

The Brazilian was an enormous upgrade on Simon Mignolet, Loris Karius and temporary No. 1 Danny Ward when he joined in the summer of 2018, showcasing why he is the best goalkeeper in the world.

 

Alisson has bailed out Liverpool too many times to mention, and even if they had paid £100 million for him, he would be a bargain.

 

As an added bonus, he even scored a huge last-gasp winner at West Brom in 2021!

What can you say about Van Dijk that hasn’t already been said?

 



 

The 34-year-old’s £75 million price tag was mocked by some at the time, but he has been worth more than double that amount, becoming one of the greatest centre-backs in history.

 

Van Dijk’s level of consistency, quality and leadership have been unrivalled, and he is now a Premier League-winning captain and true Liverpool legend.

4. Hugo Ekitike – £79m – 2025

At the time, Ekitike joined Liverpool as their third-most expensive signing ever, though quickly moved to fourth – no pressure then!

 

The Frenchman has adapted to his new surroundings so impressively, with pace and finishing accompanied by a deft first touch.

 

At 23, Ekitike is still learning, so an element of rawness is expected, but he has looked the part from minute one.

 

 

 

3. Darwin Nunez – £85m – 2022

Darwin Nunez was a much-loved figure at Liverpool, but the brutal reality is that he was a big disappointment.

 

He rarely played like the Reds’ most expensive signing of all time, with his finishing ability and hold-up play not at an elite level.

 

It became clear throughout the 2024/25 season that Arne Slot saw no future for Nunez, so it was only right that he moved on.

 

To be playing in the Saudi Pro League at 26 does say a lot about the Uruguayan, though, in terms of a lack of interest in him elsewhere.

 

 

 

2. Florian Wirtz – £116m – 2025

Wirtz became the most expensive player in Liverpool’s history when he arrived in a deal worth £116 million from Bayer Leverkusen – though he won’t mind being bumped down a spot.

 

The 22-year-old is seen as one of Europe’s best players, and he will hopefully be the next legendary figure at Anfield after Alisson, Van Dijk and Salah.

 

There is clearly huge pressure on Wirtz to justify Liverpool paying so much for him, but Slot has faith in him delivering.

 

“His mentality is maybe his biggest strength,” Slot said.

 

“That says a lot because if you see him play you’re like, ‘are you serious?’, because he’s so creative.”

 

 

 

1. Alexander Isak – £125m – 2025

Liverpool broke their transfer record for the second time in 2025, and the British record, as they finally secured the signing of Isak after a summer-long saga.

 

Eventually, the Reds got their new No. 9 who is widely considered the best striker in the Premier League, having seen only Salah achieve a higher tally than his 23 goals in 2024/25.

 

At 25 years old, Isak has signed a six-year contract at Anfield and, as well as being ready-made to start scoring immediately, is part of the long-term plan to replace Salah’s goals when he eventually winds down.
