The Reds will hope to eliminate the Saints from this competition for the second straight season
Calm before the storm: Anfield
Liverpool vs Southampton LIVE
Arne Slot and Liverpool embark on their Carabao Cup campaign this evening, hosting recently-relegated Southampton at Anfield. The Reds fell agonisingly short in this competition last season, narrowly beaten by Newcastle in the final. They have since purchased the man who scored the winner that fateful afternoon, though. Will Alexander Isak’s presence be enough to deliver the widely envied League Cup back to Merseyside this season?
In order to reach the final, though, they must knock Southampton out for the second season straight. The Saints endured a forgettable campaign last year, finishing stone dead last in the Premier League with an ignominious tally of just 12 points, but managed to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, where they were beaten 2-1 by the Reds in their own backyard. Having started the Championship season on poor form – they sit 19th after six matches – they will hope to get their campaign back on track with an Anfield cupset.
To beat Liverpool, though, Southampton will need to win for the first time since beating Norwich in the previous round of the Carabao Cup. Follow the game LIVE below with our dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Arthur Ferridge.

Adam Armstrong previews the tie
Adam Armstrong said Southampton are taking it game by game as Will Still struggles to get the Saints on song.
He told Sky Sports: “We just have to take every game as it comes. Whoever is in front of us we have to put on a show.
“The boys have a great opportunity tonight to come and perform in front of an amazing crowd. Tonight is another opportunity to show what we can do.
“It’s a competition we don’t take lightly. We go into every cup game wanting to win. We’ve had a few good draws, and to come to Anfield, it’s an amazing place and we are all excited
What of Southampton?
Will Still has made nine changes to the Saints side which was beaten 3-1 away at Hull City last week.
Leo Scienza makes his full debut for the club after joining from Heidenheim in the summer.
Adam Armstrong provides some Premier League experience.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis drops to the bench, though.

What to know about that Liverpool XI
It is an intriguing, rotated side from Arne Slot.
He names a thrilling attack, with Rio Ngumoha starting alongside British record signing Alexander Isak.
Giorgi Mamardashvili starts between the sticks in place of Allison, while Giovani Leoni is handed his full debut at centre-back.
Jeremie Frimpong will get some minutes in the legs at full-back as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.
A crop of academy youngsters are named to the bench.

When did Southampton last win at Anfield?
I’m so glad you asked.
It was in the semi-finals of this very competition back in January 2017 – eight years ago!
Southampton won 1-0 on the day, thanks to Shane Long’s 91st-minute effort.
That was more than enough to see the Saints through after they won the first leg 1-0, too, and they moved on to face Man United in the final, where their hearts were broken by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Southampton’s slow start
Southampton have been slow off the mark in the Championship this year.
Under the leadership of new manager Will Still, they have won just one of their six league matches.
They sit nineteenth in the second division, but could get their season back on track with a cup-set tonight.

Liverpool vs Southampton
Liverpool won all four of their meetings with Southampton last season.
Two Premier League meetings ended by an aggregate score of 6-3, while the Reds also took the liberty of eliminating the south coast side from both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
The Saints last beat Liverpool in 2021 – a 1-0 win with Danny Ings the only scorer. Can they arrest a four-year losing run at Anfield tonight?

Standard Sport prediction
Despite their poor league form, Southampton have notched two wins to nil to reach this point in the cup, beating Northampton Town and Norwich.
However, Liverpool are unbeaten in all six games they’ve played this season and will prove some test for the travelling Saints in their Anfield fortress.
Earlier rounds of the cup this season have already proved that anything is possible, but it’s hard to see a result other than a Liverpool victory here. Don’t be surprised if the visitors nick a goal or two, though – Slot’s men have only kept two clean sheets this season, and there will be at least a few inexperienced and out-of-practice faces in the Reds’ line-up.
Liverpool to win, 4-2.

Southampton team news
Southampton boss Will Still says he will pick a team of players who deserve to play at Anfield for, after making near wholesale changes in the first and second rounds at Northampton and Norwich respectively.
Still is set to choose from a similar squad to Saturday’s defeat at Hull, with no fresh absentees reported.
He said: “I think we’ve got a massive squad. Some players need to play, some players need an opportunity, so that’s what’s going to happen, but we’re never going to completely disregard it and put a load of Under-21s in.
“We’ve got a lot of good players, and some good players that deserve this opportunity, but also some players that have done really well considering the lesser results of the last few weeks, so it’s about getting the right mix between those players that need to play and the ones that deserve to play as well.”
