Liverpool can land Darwin Nunez replacement for free after Jurgen Klopp approval

Lille and Canada striker Jonathan David has been linked with a move to Liverpool and could be available on a free transfer in the summer

Jonathan David has reportedly caught the eye of Liverpool, as well as host of Premier League and European clubs.

Jonathan David is now a potential free replacement for Darwin Nunez at Liverpool, having been on the club’s radar for years during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure. The Reds have shown interest in the Lille striker since as far back as 2021 when Klopp was in charge.

As his contract in France nears its end, David is set to be one of the most sought-after players this summer. Nunez, 25, despite being two-and-a-half years into his Merseyside journey, hasn’t quite lived up to expectations.

The Uruguayan has only managed to net four goals in 23 appearances across all competitions this season, with just two of those in the Premier League. Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz have been rotated by Arne Slot as Liverpool’s central attacker in recent months.

However, patience with £85million signing Nunez is wearing thin among many fans, sparking talk of a renewed effort to sign David. The Canadian international currently tops Ligue 1’s scoring chart with 11 goals this campaign plus 17 goals and five assists across all competitions.

Juventus have also shown strong interest in the forward in recent months, with a departure from Lille in the summer appearing almost certain. Over the years, David – who has taken on an increasingly advanced role – has demonstrated his composure with a series of significant goals this term, including strikes against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid (twice) and Juventus in this season’s Champions League.
