Jurgen Klopp’s final Liverpool ‘regret’ as Arne Slot decision ‘attracts two clubs’

Jurgen Klopp did little wrong while he was the manager of Liverpool, but there is one thing the German said he regretted during his final campaign – and Arne Slot hasn’t rectified it

Jurgen Klopp revealed one regret he had at Liverpool last season

One of Jurgen Klopp’s final regrets at Liverpool was not using Harvey Elliott more often – and now the versatile midfielder could be on the move.

Last season, Elliott, 21, enjoyed his best campaign at Anfield, contributing four goals and 11 assists in 53 appearances. But after beginning this season with a broken foot, the former Fulham star has struggled to reinsert himself into the first team under Arne Slot.

Most of the time, Elliott was also on the fringes under Klopp. Yet, his performances led to his then-manager admitting that he should have been included in the staring XI more than he was.

However, as starts have been hard to come by under Slot, Elliott’s lack of action is said to have put several clubs on notice. According to Sky Sports, among those interested are Borussia Dortmund and Brighton and Hove Albion.

The youngster’s lack of game-time has perked the interest of both clubs, who are both known for their ability to develop young players. He was an unused substitute in the Reds’ 1-0 defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur in the first-leg of the League Cup semi-final. Elliott is also yet to start a Premier League game under Slot, who has only deployed him for 43 minutes all season.

The England U21 international’s only start all season came in the 2-1 away victory over Southampton in the quarter-finals of the League Cup. Elliott was also on the fringes when Klopp was still in the dugout.

Unfortunately for the former Blackburn Rovers loanee, while his performances made Klopp regret not using him often, Slot appears comfortable with not deploying him. Last season, when asked about Elliott after a series of strong performances, Klopp said: “It’s not like this that I go back and think, ‘OK, what did we all do wrong here and there?’

“But if I regret one thing a little bit it’s that Harvey didn’t play often enough maybe. It was in a very important and intense period. January, [with] a lot of injuries, he played really good.

“He was probably our best player, right wing, right midfield, all these kinds of things. Everybody came back and he had minutes here and there. Then he didn’t start anymore. [He] came on [and had] a big impact but it’s really nice that he could show.”

It’s currently unknown what Elliott’s thoughts on the rumours are. But if his recent interview with The Times is anything to go by, he has not given up at Anfield just yet.
