Virgil van Dijk has reportedly taken one step closer to signing a contract extension with Liverpool.

Van Dijk, much like team-mates Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

As things stand, the trio would be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a club outside of England, but according to reports, Van Dijk only has eyes fro Liverpool.

Reports from Van Dijk’s native Netherlands suggest Liverpool are willing to ‘break to bank’ and tie the defender down to a new deal.

It’s claimed by De Telegraaf that a deal is believed to be imminent for Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool in January 2018.

Exactly how much Liverpool are willing to splash on Van Dijk’s renewal isn’t yet known, but it could be a jump on the current six-figure sum he’s earning.

The colossal defender is currently pocketing a cool £220,000 per week at Anfield, as per Capology, and would no doubt want similar, if not improved, terms in order to pen a fresh deal.

Van Dijk last signed a contract extension with the Reds in August 2021 and will be 34 years old by the start of next season.

Manager Arne Slot has been quizzed about the ongoing contract sagas at Liverpool all season, but the Dutchman doesn’t think the off-field talks are impacting their performances on it.

Speaking earlier this week, he stated: “I talk with my players, if there’s anything worrying them they share it with me.

“I am not focused on social media posts or what people are saying. If you do that as Liverpool manager you will have no life, because people are always talking about us.

“If Mohamed Salah misses a penalty against Real Madrid he’s distracted by his ‘contract situation’. If Trent doesn’t play well he’s distracted by his ‘contract situation’.
