TRANSFER UPDATE :Liverpool open talks to sign one of Bundesliga’s best for £50m – Sources

Liverpool are interested in Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck

Nico Schlotterbeck’s agency have held initial talks with a host of clubs looking ahead to a potential move in the summer of 2026 and his list of potential next clubs does include Liverpool, we can confirm.

Schlotterbeck’s current contract at Borussia Dortmund is due to expire in 2027, but he has thus far shunned their advances over a new contract.

Schlotterbeck’s team are not ruling out signing a new deal at the Signal Iduna Park, but he wants to know the options that could be available to him should he move

Bayern Munich have emerged as firm favourites for the German international, but Real Madrid and Barcelona are linked.

But there is Premier League interest too, and we can confirm that contact has been made with Liverpool, who have been on his trail for more than 12 months.

Liverpool go into 2026 with huge central defensive needs and they could very well be signing two new defenders over the next two transfer windows, and Schlotterbeck is very much on their radar.

Unlike two other Liverpool targets Marc Guehi and Dayot Upamecano who are both potentially available on free transfers next summer, Schlotterbeck is likely to cost close to £50million – should Dortmund agree to a sale.

Nico Schlotterbeck to Liverpool

TEAMtalk were ahead of the curve when reporting on Liverpool’s interest in Schlotterbeck back on November 11.

Our insider, Fraser Fletcher, confirmed Schlotterbeck – who was named in three of the last four Bundesliga teams of the season – had increasing chances to depart as his contract winds down.

A lucrative offer, as ever, could tempt Dortmund who are no stranger to cashing in on their best players for huge profits.

A move to the Premier League is more than possible and sources told us Liverpool would have a say in where the left-footer ends up.

Furthermore, the fact he is left-footer makes him extra attractive to Liverpool who will eventually need to replace Virgil van Dijk on the left side of their centre-back pairing.

In other news, a prominent and trusted journalist has been informed of the REAL REASON Mohamed Salah spoke out on Saturday night.

The reporter also revealed whether Salah’s secret plan will work.

Sticking to Salah, it has now been confirmed the winger has been axed from Liverpool’s squad to face Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Finally, Liverpool fans have had their say on who they’re backing in the Salah vs Slot feud, and TEAMtalk’s panel of writers have weighed in on which of Slot and Salah will leave Liverpool first.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Man City (Szoboszlai, 74)

HE’S DONE IT AGAIN!

An absolutely sensational free-kick goal from Dominik Szoboszlai. This one might be even better than the one against Arsenal.

From a central position, around 25 yards out, it’s an absolutely sensational hit which swerves out of reach of Donnarumma, who doesn’t even dive, and slams into the net off the post.

Amazing. And what could that mean for the title race? Arsenal staying nine points clear as it stands.

Liverpool FC team news vs. Man City: 6 defenders unavailable for Arne Slot

Liverpool have six defenders unavailable for their game against Man City, with Arne Slot‘s hand forced at centre-back and right-back.

Liverpool are down to their bare bones at the back, with six defenders unable to start as the Reds try to keep pace with their top-four competitors in the Premier League.

Joe Gomez‘s fitness is the main talking point ahead of the match at Anfield, given his presence would provide cover at centre-back and full-back.

He didn’t train on Thursday, though, and Slot explained: “We have a little bit of hope that he might train on Saturday.

“So not available to start, but maybe available to help the team if needed during the game because, as you know, there are not that many defenders available at the moment.”

With Giovanni Leoni out until next season, academy defenders Amara Nallo and Wellity Lucky have made the bench in the Premier League a combined five times this season.

The latter is injured, however, so unable to come in against Man City.

Nallo got injured during Tuesday’s UEFA Youth League exit to MSK Zilina, but was named to start for the U21s on Saturday, meaning he will not be available at Anfield.

As for Lucky’s injury, the 20-year-old is set to be sidelined until April due to a hamstring injury sustained in training midway through January.

Also on Liverpool’s list of absentees is right-back Conor Bradley, who will miss the rest of the campaign.

Like Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong is currently injured but his outlook is more positive than his teammate’s.

Slot gave a brief update on the flying Dutchman’s fitness, saying he “will definitely not train this week” due to his ongoing groin problem.

With Nallo featuring at academy level, Liverpool will be without six defensive options against Man City.
