Fabrizio Romano confirms transfer timescale for Marc Guehi to Liverpool
Marc Guehi’s future is something that has taunted Liverpool’s fans since the start of the summer transfer window.
The Reds were inches away from signing the Englishman during the summer but, in the end, Steve Parish pulled out of the deal.

Although one transfer isn’t likely to have made all that much difference to the Reds’ current league position, the addition of Guehi would’ve certainly helped shore things up.
On their day, Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk are two of the best centre-backs in the world but, if the opportunity to sign the Englishman re-emerges, it’s something that Liverpool must explore.
And now, it seems like a new time scale has arisen for Liverpool to make their move for the main centre-back target.
Manchester City are preparing their bid for Marc Guehi next week
Much like Liverpool, Manchester City have suffered their fair share of defensive injuries this term.
Both Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias are set to be side-lined for extended periods which has caused Pep Guardiola to enter the transfer market for a new centre-back.
And, since Guehi’s contract is set to expire in six months, the Cityzens likely see this January as an ideal opportunity to prise him away from Selhurst Park for a cut-rate fee.
In fact, they’re actually set to make their bid for the centre-back next week, causing a new timescale for his potential transfer to emerge.
That is, according to an update from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano who shared that City are going to “try next week” for the centre-back.
“I can tell you, the real intention of the player has always been to move in the summer on a free transfer,” he said via his YouTube channel.
“Liverpool are really pushing. Arsenal are calling because Arteta is a big fan. With these two clubs insisting, Bayern also having some meetings for Guehi, but Upamecano is expected to sign a new contract.
“Then Manchester City have been clear; they will try, they want to make an important proposal, and they want to go strong for Marc Guehi in this January window.
“So, Man City will try also next week. If the player accepts, Manchester City are prepared to make an agreement with Crystal Palace, they don’t see any problems with that.
“But, it’s on the player, and his plan has always been to move in the summer on a free.”
Liverpool must make a move for Marc Guehi before Man City do
When looking at both Liverpool and City’s teams, it’s clear that the Reds are the ones who need Guehi more.
Arne Slot only has four senior centre-backs among his ranks at the moment, and, with one of them out injured until the end of the season, their depth is non-existent.
However, since the Anfield outfit seemingly want to hold off until the summer and sign him for nothing, it’s unclear whether they’ll get their man.
Guehi is the perfect target for Liverpool due to his Premier League experience and the fact that he’s homegrown.
And, even though they could sign him for nothing in the summer, if City manage to add him to their ranks, Liverpool will have missed a golden opportunity, which, in this day and age, could be rather costly.

Liverpool have six defenders unavailable for their game against Man City, with Arne Slot‘s hand forced at centre-back and right-back.
Liverpool are down to their bare bones at the back, with six defenders unable to start as the Reds try to keep pace with their top-four competitors in the Premier League.

Joe Gomez‘s fitness is the main talking point ahead of the match at Anfield, given his presence would provide cover at centre-back and full-back.
He didn’t train on Thursday, though, and Slot explained: “We have a little bit of hope that he might train on Saturday.
“So not available to start, but maybe available to help the team if needed during the game because, as you know, there are not that many defenders available at the moment.”
With Giovanni Leoni out until next season, academy defenders Amara Nallo and Wellity Lucky have made the bench in the Premier League a combined five times this season.
The latter is injured, however, so unable to come in against Man City.
Nallo got injured during Tuesday’s UEFA Youth League exit to MSK Zilina, but was named to start for the U21s on Saturday, meaning he will not be available at Anfield.
As for Lucky’s injury, the 20-year-old is set to be sidelined until April due to a hamstring injury sustained in training midway through January.
Also on Liverpool’s list of absentees is right-back Conor Bradley, who will miss the rest of the campaign.
Like Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong is currently injured but his outlook is more positive than his teammate’s.
Slot gave a brief update on the flying Dutchman’s fitness, saying he “will definitely not train this week” due to his ongoing groin problem.
With Nallo featuring at academy level, Liverpool will be without six defensive options against Man City.
