Arsenal could add £60m player to squad and replace Gabriel Martinelli with next big transfer

Anthony Gordon could become a serious option for Arsenal in this summer’s transfer window after the club opted against signing Antoine Semenyo

Gabriel Martinelli could find himself replaced in Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal squad by their next statement signing

Arsenal are expected to make a big play for a new left winger in the summer transfer window that could replace Gabriel Martinelli. Sporting director Andrea Berta completed deals in almost every position this past summer, barring an addition on the left of the Gunners’ attack.

Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke can both play in that role but prefer to be deployed in central areas and on the right respectively. Leandro Trossard’s new contract ruled out a late window move in that position and in fairness, the Belgium international has rewarded the faith shown in him by Mikel Arteta.

With seven goals and six assists to his name, Trossard is above Martinelli in the pecking order. However, he has just turned 31 and a long-term replacement is likely to come in, but it could be Martinelli that makes way.

Arsenal have been linked to a number of wingers recently with four names suggested in the summer by The Athletic’s David Ornstein on NBC Sports.

He said: “They’ll be looking at the wide positions like Anthony Gordon and Nico Williams. We see more everyday with Antoine Semenyo and Rafael Leao in the press.

“I don’t know on the veracity on all of them, but it is a position that Arsenal are focusing on.”

The Daily Mail also reported on Arsenal potentially making a move for Gordon, claiming in August that Arteta’s side ‘expressed an interest’ in signing the player.

Semenyo and Williams are almost certainly now off the table following the former’s move to Manchester City and the Spaniard opting to sign a new contract at Athletic Club. Leao meanwhile, is in talks to extend his stay at AC Milan.

As for Gordon, his future at Newcastle United is seemingly uncertain despite the fact he signed improved terms in late 2024.

Goals for the England international have dried up since then with his two Premier League strikes this season both being penalties. He has scored five Champions League goals from six appearances, though over half of those have also been spot-kicks.

The 24-year-old joined Newcastle from Everton for £45million in January 2023 and has unsurprisingly seen his value increase over the last three years.

CIES Football Observatory has listed Gordon as being worth €68.9million which converts into just under £60million. Taking into account the years left on his contract and the fact he is Premier League proven, the Magpies are likely to demand a much higher fee even with their concerns over complying with profit and sustainability rules

Gordon has been of interest to Liverpool and came close to making the switch to Anfield ahead of the 2024/25 season, though that move did not materialise.

He has since dropped a major hint on his immediate future at Newcastle which certainly suggests he is not currently considering a departure.

He told the Premier League: “It’s probably been the best three years I’ve had in football and in life too – so it’s just a good time for me and my family. Hopefully there’s many more appearances and success here too.”

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 Man City (Szoboszlai, 74)

HE’S DONE IT AGAIN!

An absolutely sensational free-kick goal from Dominik Szoboszlai. This one might be even better than the one against Arsenal.

From a central position, around 25 yards out, it’s an absolutely sensational hit which swerves out of reach of Donnarumma, who doesn’t even dive, and slams into the net off the post.

Amazing. And what could that mean for the title race? Arsenal staying nine points clear as it stands.

Liverpool FC team news vs. Man City: 6 defenders unavailable for Arne Slot

Liverpool have six defenders unavailable for their game against Man City, with Arne Slot‘s hand forced at centre-back and right-back.

Liverpool are down to their bare bones at the back, with six defenders unable to start as the Reds try to keep pace with their top-four competitors in the Premier League.

Joe Gomez‘s fitness is the main talking point ahead of the match at Anfield, given his presence would provide cover at centre-back and full-back.

He didn’t train on Thursday, though, and Slot explained: “We have a little bit of hope that he might train on Saturday.

“So not available to start, but maybe available to help the team if needed during the game because, as you know, there are not that many defenders available at the moment.”

With Giovanni Leoni out until next season, academy defenders Amara Nallo and Wellity Lucky have made the bench in the Premier League a combined five times this season.

The latter is injured, however, so unable to come in against Man City.

Nallo got injured during Tuesday’s UEFA Youth League exit to MSK Zilina, but was named to start for the U21s on Saturday, meaning he will not be available at Anfield.

As for Lucky’s injury, the 20-year-old is set to be sidelined until April due to a hamstring injury sustained in training midway through January.

Also on Liverpool’s list of absentees is right-back Conor Bradley, who will miss the rest of the campaign.

Like Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong is currently injured but his outlook is more positive than his teammate’s.

Slot gave a brief update on the flying Dutchman’s fitness, saying he “will definitely not train this week” due to his ongoing groin problem.

With Nallo featuring at academy level, Liverpool will be without six defensive options against Man City.
