There is a swell of momentum behind Liverpool. Nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table, their next test is against Newcastle United on the road.

The 2-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday capped off a stellar week for the Reds and has provided them with a huge buffer to their toiling rivals. A victory here at another tricky place to go could be a body blow to both Arsenal and City.

Newcastle have struggled as of late too and were swatted aside by lowly West Ham last time out in front of their own supporters. After some big spending in recent years, more is expected of Eddie Howe’s side.

Here is how our Liverpool writers would send the Reds out at St James’ Park in what has long been one of the classic Premier League fixtures

Newcastle is never an easy place to go to, as anyone who has had to drive up the A1 will attest.

And a game in the North East is always difficult, particularly under the lights when you’re Premier League leaders having just had to overcome Real Madrid and Manchester City.

What, then, is Liverpool boss Arne Slot to do?

The injury issues – certainly compared to their main title challengers – mean there isn’t a lot of scope for change, particularly at the back where three defenders and a goalkeeper remain out.

It means Caoimhin Kelleher is in goal, Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, Andy Robertson left-back and Joe Gomez alongside Virgil van Dijk at centre-back.

In midfield there can be rotation. Alexis Mac Allister can have a rest, with Curtis Jones dropping in next to Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai the number 10.

Another major week for Liverpool begins with the first of a difficult couple of away games at Newcastle United. Arne Slot’s squad is approaching ‘injury-hit’ territory with around a half dozen players sidelined.

The good news is the Reds have navigated these absences without a hitch but with such a punishing run to come on the back of a huge, sapping week at home against Real Madrid and Manchester City, it will be interesting to see how Slot juggles his options.

Conventional wisdom dictates Newcastle will provide the superior quality to Everton across this week but the final Goodison Park derby might be the catalyst for the Blues to raise their levels against their old nemesis. So does Slot rotate tonight? Or does he ask his high-flying players to go to the well once more this evening?

Andy Robertson starts because of Kostas Tsimikas’s injury, and Joe Gomez continues to deputise for Ibrahima Konate. Trent Alexander-Arnold is also named in the XI with Jarell Quansah waiting in the wings to give the right-back a breather if possible.

In midfield, Curtis Jones comes in for Dominik Szoboszlai, despite his excellent showing against Man City. Wataru Endo might be needed for his combative qualities at Goodison, so Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister start and, in an ideal world, Harvey Elliott can get some minutes.

Darwin Nunez returns down the middle and Luis Diaz can rest up for the final half hour or so, if needed. The Uruguayan has three goals at St James’ Park during his time on Merseyside.

After downing both Real Madrid and Man City at Anfield in less than a week, Liverpool now travel to Newcastle looking to keep their impeccable run under Arne Slot going. St. James’ Park under the lights will not be easy.

Having stunned the Magpies in this fixture last season, Darwin Nunez can return upfront to hopefully torment the Tynesiders once more. Luis Diaz drops to the bench as a result, with the in-form Cody Gakpo keeping his place on the left.

In midfield, Curtis Jones comes back in but it can be Alexis Mac Allister who is rotated out on this occasion as the England international starts in that deeper role.

As for the defence, injuries ensure it pretty much picks itself. It’s an unchanged back five from the 2-0 win over Man City, with Jarell Quansah the only deputy waiting in the wings.
