Arsenal welcome European kings Real Madrid to Emirates Stadium tonight in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Real Madrid have a formidable record in the Champions League and the 15-time winners arrive in north London as favourites with stars like Kylian Mbappe, Vinicus Jr and Jude Bellingham.

They have already knocked out Manchester City and Atletico Madrid to reach the quarter-finals but Arsenal have impressed in the Champions League this season and the Gunners are boosted by the return of Bukayo Saka, who is fit again after three months out with a hamstring injury.

This will be just the third meeting between the two clubs and Arsenal will be hoping for a repeat of their last encounter, when Thierry Henry inspired a 1-0 win at the Bernabeu before a 0-0 draw at Highbury on their way to the 2006 Champions League final.

It has been a difficult few weeks for Arsenal, as they have seen several key players go down with lengthy injuries. Gabriel has undergone surgery on a hamstring injury suffered against Fulham last week and is expected to be out for the season, while Riccardo Calafiori is also set for a spell on the sidelines after injuring his knee on international duty with Italy.

Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, and Takehiro Tomiyasu all remain injured, too, while Raheem Sterling is suspended after being booked in the last round. Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Martinelli are one yellow card away from missing the second leg through suspension.

Real Madrid have been boosted after Thibaut Courtois has declared himself “fully fit” after missing the last three games with a knee problem.

Aurelien Tchouameni is suspended and both Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao out for the season with ACL injuries.

Ferland Mendy and former Arsenal loanee Dani Ceballos have both been left out of Carlo Ancelotti’s travelling squad with injuries.

With both sides facing a mounting injury list and on shaky form, Tuesday night’s match will be tricky to call. But despite the stripped-back squad, Madrid’s European pedigree and more experienced squad will have a level of nous that their hosts may not be able to match.

For all the injuries, Madrid will still boast Vinicius Jr and Mbappe up top, an attack which is sure to overwhelm Arsenal’s thin defence. It will take some doing for the Gunners to take an advantage into the second leg.
