Xabi Alonso ‘Demands Five Signings’ at Liverpool After Agent Breaks Silence on Links

Published

Arne Slot’s job at Liverpool is becoming more and more unstable as the weeks roll on, with the Premier League champions stumbling towards a nightmare season. The firm favourite to replace him at Anfield if he is dismissed is Xabi Alonso.

The Spanish coach has been waiting in the wings ever since leaving Real Madrid in early 2026, with many expecting the ex-Red to return to his old club if a change is made. While his time in Spain didn’t work out, Alonso is still one of the highest-rated managers in the world.

With every disappointing result for Liverpool, such as the 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened Tottenham, Slot’s position appears to be growing less secure. Reports have suggested which signings Alonso would be looking to make, while his agent has spoken out.

Xabi Alonso’s First Three Signings at Liverpool

According to Football365, reports in Spain have claimed Alonso has now set his demands to take up the Anfield hotseat. The Spanish tactician reportedly has put forward Alessandro Bastoni as ‘a key piece in building a solid team from the back’.

The Italian centre-back would attract a high transfer fee, but is capable of filling in as a left-back while also being used to the left-sided role of a back three. That’s a system Alonso used regularly at Bayer Leverkusen and could allow Virgil van Dijk to be more protected.

Going into more detail, the report also claims that Crystal Palace maestro, Adam Wharton, is top of Alonso’s wishlist in the middle of the park. Very much of a similar mould to the precise passing and controlled style Alonso showed in his playing days, Wharton is expected to be hot property this summer.

The report states: “In addition to strengthening the defence, the Spanish manager has also requested the addition of young talent in other areas of the pitch. One of the names on his list is Adam Wharton, an English midfielder who has attracted considerable interest in the Premier League due to his ability to control the tempo of the game and his potential for future success.”

Finally, Bradley Barcola is the man to inject some much-needed pace and dribbling ability on the wing. The Frenchman is capable of playing on either side and would be a significant improvement on a struggling Cody Gakpo and ageing Mohamed Salah.

Alonso’s Agent Breaks Silence on Liverpool Links

While some supporters may already be getting excited at the prospect of seeing Alonso back on Merseyside, his agent has made sure to pour cold water on any talks of an ‘agreement’ to replace Slot. Speaking to WinWin (Per Yahoo), Inaki Ibanez said he is considering his options but nothing is close to being agreed:

“Alonso is considering all the offers he has received to determine his next destination for next season. All this talk of a contract with Liverpool is nothing more than media speculation.”

Fans Slam Dominik Szoboszlai For Interview Immediately After Liverpool Lost 2-0 vs PSG

Liverpool fans have reacted badly to Dominik Szoboszlai’s post-match interview following Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat away at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Arne Slot’s beleaguered side, who were thrashed 4-0 by Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday, failed to register a single shot on target at the Parc des Princes.

Goals either side of half-time from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia secured a deserved first-leg victory for the reigning European champions in Paris.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher summed up the thoughts of concerned Liverpool supporters after the match by saying live on CBS Sports: “That, what we’ve just saw tonight, was like watching a team from a lower division playing someone [much better].

“The gulf in class was very worrying from a Liverpool point of view.”

Wednesday’s result piles further pressure on the shoulders of Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who many pundits and fans alike suspect will no longer be in charge at Anfield beyond the end of this season.

The cracks are starting to show among the squad, with Szoboszlai heavily criticised by supporters for his eyebrow-raising actions at the Etihad Stadium following Liverpool’s defeat to City at the weekend.

Despite receiving criticism from fans, the Hungary international – one of the Reds’ standout performers over the course of what has been a tough season for the Merseyside outfit – fronted up and conducted a post-match interview with beIN Sports following Liverpool’s latest defeat.

Szoboszlai spoke with optimism ahead of the second leg, telling beIN Sports’ reporter Matt Spiro: “We’re not going to be only 11 players, we’re going to be the whole stadium… I can’t really wait for it, these nights in Anfield are always special.” Watch the interview below:

However, supporters are far less convinced that a comeback is possible at Anfield with this group of players playing under Arne Slot. As a result, they’ve hit out at Szoboszlai for talking ‘nonsense’ given the circumstances.

One fan said on X (Twitter): “Man, shut up. You shouldn’t need fans to register a shot on target or play well.”

Another commented: “Sorry, but you were absolutely pathetic today. When the ball was with you it felt like it was a fire ball.”

One particularly angry supporter added: “After that reaction towards the fans at City, he can genuinely f*** off.” And a fourth fan wrote:

BREAKING: 🗣️ “I have sat here for 90 minutes and watched our European dreams fade away while I wasn’t even given a chance to warm up. After everything I have sacrificed for this badge, to be treated like an afterthought because of him in a Quarter Final is a message I cannot ignore. My agent has been told to finalize the exit terms tonight because the respect is clearly gone,” Mohamed Salah’s camp has reportedly leaked a devastating reaction after the Egyptian King was left as an unused sub in the 2-0 loss to PSG.

I’ve just spent 90 minutes watching our European hopes slip away without even being given the chance to warm up. After all I’ve given to this club, being treated like an afterthought in a quarter-final because of one decision is something I can’t accept. I’ve already instructed my agent to sort out an exit tonight—the respect is clearly no longer there,” a source close to Mohamed Salah reportedly revealed after he was left on the bench during the 2–0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Tensions are now said to be rising, with one of the club’s most prolific modern-era scorers growing increasingly frustrated with the manager’s approach, as the fallout from the Paris clash continues to escalate.
