Kevin De Bruyne has congratulated Virgil van Dijk after the Liverpool captain signed a new contract at Anfield. Van Dijk’s previous deal was due to run out this summer, but he has now committed his future to the Reds.
It was confirmed on Thursday that the Dutchman has penned fresh terms until June 2027. The ex-Southampton defender has joined Mohamed Salah, who signed a two-year extension last week, in agreeing a new contract at Liverpool, and he admitted he had no doubt that he would be staying.
“It was always Liverpool,” said Van Dijk. “That was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan and it was always Liverpool.”

Van Dijk then posted on Instagram to reiterate the same message. He said in a caption: “It was always Liverpool,” alongside a video of his most memorable moments in a Reds shirt so far.
In the comments to that post, De Bruyne, who has announced that he is leaving Manchester City at the end of the season, sent a three-word message to Van Dijk.

Although De Bruyne and Van Dijk have never played together, the duo appear to share a mutual relationship on and off the field. They have come up against each other on a number of occasions, however, and played in some of the best matches between Liverpool and Manchester City over the years.
Van Dijk has made 314 appearances for the Reds since arriving from Southampton in January 2018. He has won the Premier League, Champions League, Carabao Cup twice and the FA Cup during his time at Liverpool.
“There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family,” Van Dijk added.
“I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling. It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible.
“The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing and I’m so happy.”
