Where are the eight defenders Liverpool considered instead of Virgil van Dijk in 2017 now?”

Liverpool extended Virgil van Dijk’s contract by two years, but his arrival at Anfield in 2017 wasn’t always guaranteed. That summer, the club began pursuing the Dutch defender, but their efforts hit a snag when Southampton lodged a complaint over how Liverpool approached the deal. As a result, the Reds issued a public apology and announced they had ended their interest in Van Dijk.

In a statement, Liverpool said: “Liverpool Football Club would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton Football Club and player transfers between the two clubs. We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk. We respect Southampton’s position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.”

With Van Dijk seemingly out of reach, Liverpool explored other defensive options, considering eight alternative targets. Although they eventually returned for Van Dijk in January and successfully signed him, here’s a look at where those alternative targets ended up:

Michael Keane had just helped Burnley stay in the Premier League and was on Liverpool’s radar, as well as Manchester United’s. He instead joined Everton for £25 million. His time there has been inconsistent, but he’s made over 200 appearances and has earned several England caps.
