Liverpool host Arsenal in what could have been a decisive clash in the Premier League title race, but instead will be game number two of Liverpool’s victory tour.

Arsenal have confirmed that they will give the champions a guard of honour as Liverpool return to Anfield for the first time since they won the Premier League title.

The Gunners go into the match six points ahead of sixth-placed Nottingham Forest so a win on Sunday would all but seal their spot in the Champions League for next season.

Recent form

In their first game since winning the Premier League, Liverpool fell short at Stamford Bridge, losing 3-1, but prior to that they were on a three-game winning run. That run included a 5-1 dismantling of Tottenham in the match that sealed the league title.

Arsenal crashed out of the Champions League by losing 3-1 on aggregate to PSG, the same side that knocked Liverpool out of the competition. Arsenal’s form in the league has not been perfect either, in their last two fixtures they have lost 2-1 to Bournemouth and drew 2-2 with Crystal Palace at the Emirates.

What’s been said?

Liverpool boss Arne Slot believes that there is still something at stake for Arsenal and he is looking forward to the game.

“Both teams look forward to playing this game,” he said. “Difficult to predict. There is a little bit at stake for Arsenal as I presume they would rather finish second than third or fourth.”

He added: “Difficult to predict if it will be edgy but it is a game to look forward to.”

Ahead of the match Mikel Arteta said that his side will give Liverpool a guard of honour after they sealed the Premier League title.

He said: “They deserve that. I mean, they’ve been the better team, they’ve been the most consistent, and the coaching has been fascinating, it’s been really good. And they fully deserve it. And that’s the sport. When somebody’s better, you have to applaud and accept and try to reach that level.”
