Arsenal are reportedly eyeing Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins as they continue their search for a new centre forward this summer, according to reports from Record.
The Gunners have been strongly linked with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyökeres. However, no deal has been agreed for either and the Gunners are keeping their options open.
According to the Portuguese outlet, Arsenal had two bids for Gyökeres turned down. The offers were worth £47 million and £58.5 million respectively.
With the Sporting forward looking out of reach, Mikel Arteta’s side are now considering other names, and Watkins is high on their list.
The English striker has been on Arsenal’s radar for some time. The club also made efforts to sign him during the January transfer window.
Watkins is valued at around £34m by Transfermarkt, making him a cheaper alternative to Gyökeres or Sesko.
Watkins could be the ideal fit for Arteta’s system
Watkins has developed into one of Aston Villa’s most important players. He finished last season with 17 goals and 14 assists in all competitions.
The 29-year-old is at the peak of his career. His performances have been key to Villa’s rise under manager Unai Emery in the past year.
He is known for his sharp movement and tireless work rate. Watkins can both score and create, making him a strong all-round attacking threat.
He is good at timing his runs and breaking into space behind defences. He is also effective in tight spaces due to his quick decision-making.
The England international is comfortable with both feet and poses an aerial threat, giving him different ways to hurt the opposition.
He also plays well with his back to goal, linking up play and helping his team move forward in attacking transitions.
Watkins could slot into Arteta’s system with ease. His mobility and intelligent positioning would offer a different dynamic to Arsenal’s current options.
Another advantage for Arsenal is that Watkins grew up supporting the club. A move to the Emirates could appeal to him on a personal level.
Arsenal believe Watkins could deliver instant results. With Premier League experience and top form, he looks ready for a bigger challenge.
Whether Villa will entertain offers for one of their top players remains to be seen, but Arsenal appear ready to test their resolve.
