Alexander Isak is becoming increasingly frustrated at his position at Newcastle United, who are refusing to sell him to Liverpool.
Despite the Reds being ready to pay a huge fee for him, the Magpies are not ready to sell him right now.
Isak revealed in a recent statement that he had an agreement with the club that they would sell him this summer, and the trust between them is now severed.
Many Liverpool fans are hoping that Isak manages to terminate his current contract with Newcastle, which expires in 2028.
However, a sports lawyer has explained the possible repercussions Isak could face if he forces a move to Liverpool and decides to terminate his contract.
Lawyer Max Shephard told Sportsbible: “If a player terminates without just cause, Article 17 states that compensation is payable to the club. That compensation can cover wages but may also factor in the player’s market value, the cost of a replacement, and other financial losses suffered by the club.
“Panels have interpreted this quite broadly and the sums involved can be substantial. On top of that, the player could be liable for legal costs if the matter goes to a tribunal. For someone of Isak’s profile, the financial repercussions would be severe if he was found to be in breach.”
Basically, if Isak tries to terminate his contract and join Liverpool on a free transfer, he’d have to pay a huge amount money to Newcastle.
This would not only include three-years worth of wages, but cost of a replacement (over £50m at least) and his market value (which is over £100m). He’d be risking having to pay way more than Liverpool would have for a direct transfer.
Isak will hope that Newcastle relents to his demands and agrees to sell him to Liverpool before the 2025 summer window closes.
