Gyokeres and Isak

Arsenal star Viktor Gyokeres has been praised online for speaking out about teammate Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool on transfer deadline day for a record British transfer fee – with the drawn-out saga seeing the Gunners hitman state that there isn’t much player power in football, after Isak came under fire for the way he manouevered the deal.

Fomer Newcastle United hero Isak had been on Liverpool’s radar for a long time, as the Reds aimed to bolster their forward line under Arne Slot – but a dragged-out deal came with various hiccups along the way. Isak wasn’t allowed to take part in training and the Magpies’ pre-season tour of Asia, before the Reds submitted a £110million bid for his services in early August.

That was rejected, which led to a war of words between the two clubs. Isak released a bombshell statement and refused to take part in any Premier League matches, even though Liverpool had backed away from a deal – and it only took Newcastle softening their stance on transfer deadline day to see a completed transfer of £130million.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres have 31 goals combined for Sweden – with Isak edging his teammate.

And with his national teammate coming under the cosh, Gyokeres – who himself had to manouevre a £63.5million deal from Sporting to north London – revealed that he has spoken with Isak, taking solace with the new Anfield icon for the lack of player power, which was met with applause by fans online.

The Emirates star said:

“I haven’t spoken with him too much as he just came, so I said hello to him and congratulated him for the move, not much more.

“I said earlier about my situation, I think it can be the same in that you don’t really know what’s been going on behind [the scenes]. I don’t really know in his case what the situation has been exactly, so it’s difficult for me to speak about that.

“We all play, and the clubs have the most power. It’s maybe difficult for the players to choose in a lot of cases. When it’s a player that is not wanted in that club, I think it’s the total opposite.

“He doesn’t have any power, the club can literally do whatever they want with the player. It’s difficult, but it’s how the situation is.”

How Fans Reacted to Viktor Gyokeres’ Statement on Alexander Isak

Fans were critical of Isak and Gyokeres’ behaviour throughout the summer, but after Gyokeres’ conference in Sweden, many have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to praise Gyokeres for his truthful comments.

One kept it short and simple, writing: “Facts”, whilst another posted: “makes a good point. guys like Antony not wanted at Man Utd forced to train with reserves living out of a hotel for months. but when the player shows them same respect its all over the news.”

A third fan said: “That’s an honest take you don’t hear often”, and another wrote: “Gyokeres didn’t hold back.”

Finally, a fifth fan stated they ‘didn’t believe in player power’, adding: “I think he’s spot on here. There is no loyalty in football from clubs or players. I don’t believe in “player power”. If a club don’t want a player they will do all they can to get rid of him.”

However, there were some with negative comments over what Gyokeres had said. One fan stated: “He refused to play and got the move he wanted, what are you talking about?”, whilst another harked back to Gyokeres’ saga, typing: “He did the same with sporting lol.”

And a final fan stuck the dagger in further, adding: “What a load of rubbish he talks”.
