Moyes says Everton will miss Doucoure as he plans summer rebuild

David Moyes admitted Everton will miss Abdoulaye Doucoure as he revealed he is expecting a busy summer behind the scenes.

Midfielder Doucoure announced on Tuesday that he will be leaving the Toffees this summer at the end of his contract after five years at Goodison Park.

Moyes revealed the 32-year-old has his future planned, saying: “I think he’s been a great servant for the club, he’s done a great job over many years here. We made him an offer and he’s got a better one to go elsewhere so, from that point of view, we have to live with that.

“We’re quite comfortable with that. We’re also trying to look to rebuild and make things better and try to see what we can do more.

“We wanted him to stay but obviously he’s chosen to take a better offer. Since I’ve been here he’s been really, really good. We’ve just about selected him in every game we’ve played. We’ll miss him but I’ve got no hard feelings from his decision.”

Everton are likely to reveal on Monday the fate of other out-of-contract players like Idrissa Gueye, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Michael Keane following their final Premier League match of the season against Newcastle on Sunday.

Moyes has been delighted with the efforts of his players in securing a 13th-placed finish, but believes the hard work has just started when it comes to improving the squad.

“We’ve got an awful lot of players out of contract, we’ve got the most players on loan of any club in the Premier League,” he said.

“We have to find a way of starting to get back on the correct road. We’ll try and do that, we’ll try and sign some players, but we’ll also have to keep some players as well.

“I’ve got no problem with keeping them all at the moment because they’re doing so well, but we want to add and we want to become better.

“We’ve got a lot of things in place, we’re obviously touching base with some people to see what their thoughts are, would they like to join the club. There’s a lot of things going on behind the scenes at the moment.

“We’ve worked hard in the three or four months we’ve been here to try and get ourselves in a strong position. We’ve certainly kept ourselves a Premier League club so the next part is to grow it. That’s a little bit harder but we now need to take it forward.”

Liverpool’s Wirtz hopes given significant boost

Liverpool’s chances of signing Florian Wirtz have increased significantly with the player now considering leaving Germany.

Wirtz is a major Liverpool target this summer but as recently as earlier this week they believed he wanted to stay in Germany – either by signing for Bayern Munich or remaining at Bayer Leverkusen for one more.

Liverpool have been waiting for confirmation from Wirtz that he wants to play in England before making a formal offer. The player’s change of heart is being viewed as a significant boost to Liverpool’s hopes of completing a club-record transfer.

Sky Germany now believe the player is leaning towards moving to Liverpool.

They are reporting that view is shared by Leverkusen – and Bayern Munich.

Newport confirm appointment of ex-Man Utd coach Hughes

Newport have announced the appointment of David Hughes as their new manager.

The 47-year-old has left Man Utd to sign a two-year deal at Rodney Parade.

He was working with United’s U21s as coach and assistant manager.

Hughes replaces Nelson Jardim, who was sacked in April.

The former Wales U21 international has previously worked at Shrewsbury, Watford, Wales, Aston Villa, Southampton and Cardiff.

His only previous senior management experience came at Welsh outfit Barry Town in 2003 and 2004.

Delap given permission to explore options for next season

Ipswich have given striker Liam Delap permission to explore his options for next season, Kieran McKenna has confirmed.

The 22-year-old, who joined Ipswich from Manchester City last summer, is expected to leave the Suffolk club following their relegation back to the Sky Bet Championship.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle have all been linked with a reported £30m relegation release clause in his contract.

“Liam’s looking at his options for next year, which I think he is entitled to do and we support him with that,” McKenna said.

“I think we have given him permission to do that this week. It’s a very important decision for his future.

“Of course there is a lot of interest – and rightly so. I think part of his week has been having some of those conversations.

“It looks more likely than not that he will move on this summer and he has interest from pretty much every club in the league, and I don’t think there are many clubs in the world who wouldn’t want to have him.

“(However) nothing is sorted, nothing is done or completed or even very, very, very close, so that process will take its course.”

McKenna added: “We will be proud of the part that we have had in terms of Liam’s development and his contribution this season.

“If he stays with us, we will be delighted, and if he moves on this summer, it will be a positive sign for the club to have developed and sold a player at that sort of level and hopefully it will be a good move for him as well.”

Talks continue with defenders Cameron Burgess and Axel Tuanzebe over possibly extending their stay.
