Arsenal romped to a 4-0 Champions League win over Atletico Madrid, as they scored four in 13 minutes. The Gunners swamped Atletico in the opening minutes, as initially, it looked like it may be a one-sided encounter. As ever, Diego Simeone was a very animated figure on the touchline. Dressed in a black suit and tie, the Argentine demanded Myles Lewis-Skelly be booked for fouling his son. Such breaks in play enabled the Spanish side to slowly gain a foothold in the game.
As the first-half went on, it became a very competitive game, with quite the physical battle taking place between Viktor Gyokeres and Atletico centre-back Jose Gimenez. The latter went into the book for a challenge on the Swede. The Gunners then had the ball in the net, when Gabriel Martinelli diverted Bukayo Saka’s ball in, but it was ruled out for offside.
In the second-half, it was Atletico who threatened the Arsenal goal. Former Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez was unfortunate to see his long-range effort clip the crossbar. In the end, Arsenal did draw first blood, Gabriel rising to head in a Declan Rice set piece. Arsenal doubled their lead seven minutes later, when Myles Lewis-Skelly fed a pass into Martinelli, who produced a lovely finish. Within a further six minutes it was four, with Gyokeres helping himself to a double as Atletico collapsed.
There were no further goals as Arsenal became the first side in Champions League history to win seven consecutive matches against Spanish teams. They’ve beaten Sevilla twice, Real Madrid twice, Girona, Athletic Bilbao and now Atletico Madrid in a mightily impressive run of results which began in 2023.

Had to stand up to the task as Atletico maintained a strong physical presence.

Had to be strong in the air at times as the Madrid side pushed Arsenal hard in the first-half.
LB: Myles Lewis-Skelly – 6.5/10
Caught out a few times when Atletico broke quickly, but overall maintained good shape in the Arsenal back four.
RM: Eberechi Eze – 6.5/10
Looked like a possible scorer in the opening minutes, but not able to stamp his real quality on the game after that.
CM: Martin Zubimendi – 6.5/10
Booked in the first-half, but still showed his quality with some very good deliveries into the box.
LM: Declan Rice – 7/10
Once again, he was responsible for some great set piece deliveries.
RW: Bukayo Saka – 7.5/10
Once again, Saka represented the Gunners’ biggest attacking threat at times.
CF: Viktor Gyokeres – 7/10
Had a real tussle with Atletico centre-back Gimenez and got a brace of goals.
LW: Gabriel Martinelli – 6.5/10
Strayed narrowly offside to prevent him giving the Gunners the lead, but made amends with a cracking goal in the second half.
SUB: Cristhian Mosquera – 6/10
With the Gunners 4-0 to the good, this was a leisurely outing for the defender.
SUB: Christian Norgaard – 6/10
Just under 18 minutes given to the Dane with Arsenal home and hosed.
SUB: Ethan Nwaneri – 6/10
Some vital minutes given to the youngster.
SUB: Ben White – 5/10
The game was over long ago when the defender came on.

Made a good few decent stops as Arsenal looked to make a quick start to the game.

Looked sharp in the first half, but it ended horribly.

Fully prepared to grapple with any Arsenal player getting anywhere near the Atletico penalty area.
CB: Jose Gimenez – 6.5/10
Enjoyed something of a ding-dong with Victor Gyokeres, and he wasn’t prepared to shirk the challenge.
LB: David Hancko – 6/10
Struggled somewhat early on against Saka, before settling into the game.
RM: Giuliano Simeone – 7/10
After a difficult start, he came into the game and carried a threat going forward.
CM: Pablo Barrios – 6.5/10
Alongside Koke, he slowly got himself into what was a very competitive match.

The Atletico stalwart looked to steady the ship with his touch and presence.

Looked a little exposed by Arsenal’s right side early on, but

Very accomplished touch and looked a real danger to Arsenal.

Not as assured with his first touch initially, but as the game progressed, he was a reliable outlet.

Part of a treble substitution, but within a minute of coming on Arsenal were 2-0 up.
SUB: Conor Gallagher – 5/10
Not able to make a real impact as the Gunners went 3-0 up shortly after the Englishman came on.

Not the cameo he would have wanted.

The game was over when the Frenchman came on.

Gunners boss is juggling injuries in his squad for fourth-round clash
Arsenal will be without William Saliba and Gabriel Martinelli for tonight’s Carabao Cup fourth-round match against Brighton.
The pair picked up injuries during Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Saliba was forced to come off at half-time. Martinelli finished the match, but limped down the tunnel following the full-time whistle.
Mikel Arteta has confirmed the pair will now miss Wednesday’s match at home to Brighton, and he is unsure when they will return.
“[Saliba] is out,” said Arteta. “We are assessing him, but he won’t be involved this match.
“It looks as well that [Martinelli] is going to be out. We have to, again, do some more tests and see the extent of the injury. But this game is going to be too early for him.”
Arsenal have received a boost, though, as Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Riccardo Calafiori are all fit.
Saka was struggling with illness before Sunday’s game against Palace and came off just after the hour mark.
Calafiori and Rice were both substituted before the end of the match due to knocks.
The trio are all available to face Brighton, but Arteta is expected to rotate his team.
Kepa Arrizabalaga is due to start in goal and make his second appearance of the season.
Ben White, Cristhian Mosquera and Myles Lewis-Skelly should come into the defence, while there could be a full debut for Piero Hincapie.
Ahead of them, Ethan Nwaneri and Christian Norgaard are likely to play in midfield. Mikel Merino could lead the line if Arteta decides to rest striker Viktor Gyokeres.
Max Dowman, who is only 15 years old, is a contender to be in the squad.

Gabriel starts for Arsenal against Crystal Palace.
The Brazilian centre-back was a fitness doubt after he was forced off in Tuesday’s 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
But Gabriel trained with the Arsenal squad ahead of the game and has been passed fit to start alongside William Saliba at centre-back.
His fitness is a major for Arsenal as they bid to capitalise on Liverpool’s latest slip-up and strengthen their position at the top of the Premier League.
Victory against Palace would move Arsenal seven points clear of title rivals Liverpool.
Mikel Arteta has opted for Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori on the left flank.
Gabriel Martinelli and Myles Lewis-Skelly both impressed after coming into the team against Atletico but Trossard and Calafiori return.
The returns of Trossard and Calafiori are the only two changes Arteta has made from the Atletico win.
Arteta has kept other changes to a minimum, with Arsenal also facing Brighton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
