Mikel speaking today

Morning all! Bright and early to start the day ahead of the Premier League’s return this evening!

Arsenal don’t start their campaign until Sunday, when they take on Manchester United at Old Trafford.

But he will sit down for his first pre-Prem press conference of the season today.

Arteta will face the media at roughly 1:30pm to talk team news, transfer updates and Arsenal’s ambitions for the season

Trossard developments

News that Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey could be heading to Roma may mean Leandro Trossard could be on the move.

Trossard has been linked with a switch to Villa Park this summer and an influx of cash for the Villans and a vacancy on the wing could mean Unai Emery’s side start making moves.

Newcastle’s £40m move for Jacob Ramsey could also increase the likelihood of a move for Trossard from Villa.

Carra’s Zubimendi theory

Jamie Carragher has said he is “convinced” that Mikel Arteta “stole” Martin Zubimendi away from Liverpool.

Zubimendi appeared set for an Anfield switch last summer, but ultimately snubbed the Merseyside club in favour of sticking around at Real Sociedad for another year.

Carragher reckons Arteta may have had something to do with the situation, with Arsenal quick to enter the race afterwards.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, he said: “I’m convinced now that Arteta stole him from Liverpool.

“He’d agreed to come to Liverpool. He said he was coming – and at the last minute he said, ‘I don’t want to come. I’ll have another year [at Sociedad].’

“Arteta’s from the Basque area. There’s no doubt he’s been into him and said, ‘We’re signing [Mikel] Merino this season, we’ll come for you next season.’

“The deal was done about halfway through the season. He definitely stopped [Liverpool’s] deal. That’s why Zubimendi didn’t go to Liverpool. I think Arteta got into him.”

Who could go?

Plenty of the reporting around Arsenal at the moment suggests that the Gunners are looking to sell before they make any more signings.

But who could go?

The BBC’s Sami Mokbel has claimed that Leandro Trossard is “set to leave” Arsenal before the end of the window.

Trossard has been linked with an exit all summer, but had been in talks over a pay-rise on his current deal too.

However, Mokbel claims that he, alongside Reiss Nelson and Fabio Vieira, is set to head for the exit doors.

Arsenal are keen for a new left winger to arrive in the remaining weeks of the window, but need to move players on before they can splash out on additions.

Team news

Arsenal will begin their Premier League campaign on Sunday with the tough test of a trip to face a new-look Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Gunners will have plenty of new options to pick from with new signings Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Cristhian Mosquera and Martin Zubimendi all available for selection.

While Mikel Arteta won’t have to worry about any new injuries to the rest of his squad ahead of the clash either.

Gabriel Jesus, who is recovering from an ACL injury sustained last season, is the only guaranteed absentee.

Leandro Trossard is considered doubtful for the match, but Arteta has insisted he “should be fine”.

Meanwhile Kai Havertz and Riccardo Calafiori, who were initially thought to be carrying knocks, both featured in the Gunners’ 3-0 pre-season win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday and should be fighting fit for Sunday too.

Xhaka made Sunderland captain

Former Arsenal skipper Granit Xhaka has been made the captain of a different Premier League club.

Xhaka has been given the armband at Sunderland after his summer move from Bayer Leverkusen.

The midfielder has returned to the Prem after two years in the Bundesliga.

Arsenal fans awaiting his return to the Emirates will have to wait until February when the Black Cats visit North London.

A little look at some of the new arrivals at the Emirates fulfilling their media duties ahead of the new campaign starting this weekend.
