Arsene Wenger has blasted officials for awarding Inter Milan a penalty during their Champions League semi-final clash with Barcelona. The two sides faced off at the San Siro on Tuesday night, with a spot in the Champions League final up for grabs. The home side raced out to the lead too, with Lautaro Martinez hitting the back of the net in the first half.

They then doubled their lead when the striker was judged to have been fouled by Pau Cubarsi inside the Barcelona area before the interval. Initially, no foul was given, but after a VAR check, it was revealed from a certain angle that Martinez got a touch on the ball before the defender and the decision was changed, with a spot-kick being awarded.

Now, the former Arsenal manager has slated the decision to change the call and didn’t hold back in his assessment.

He wasn’t happy at all

During coverage of the game, with Barcelona trailing 2-0, Wenger revealed that he wasn’t happy with the decision to award a penalty after the officials took a look at the foul via VAR. He thinks the use of slow motion with VAR when assessing fouls isn’t right. Speaking about the spot-kick, the Frenchman said:

“I’m highly AGAINST these kind of penalties. And I’m highly against using slow motion VAR.”

This isn’t the first time the former Arsenal manager has been making headlines recently. Earlier in the week, he claimed that he wanted to see a change of rules in the Europa League which would mean that the competition’s winner would no longer earn a spot in the Champions League as a result of their triumph. There aren’t many who agree, but he’s never been one to keep his opinions, no matter how bold, to himself.

His comments about the penalty have caused a stir online. One fan took to X (Twitter) and said: “That’s a pen, all day. Monsieur Wenger isn’t always right,” while another simply posted: “Using slow motion to see that he doesn’t touch the ball seems like a valid reason to use slow motion.”
