BREAKING NEWS: Arteta is responsible for my predicament,I called Him to discuss my possible return to Emirate to f!ght for my number 1 shirt from David Raya but what He told me is what I did not expect from Him, Imagine giving my all for this Club and this is what I could get”, Aaron Ramsdale reveals what Arteta told Him after Southampton got relegated from the premier League
Aaron Ramsdale looks set for an unlikely transfer reunion less than a year after leaving Arsenal. The England international left the Emirates last summer to join Southampton in a deal worth a reported £25million, but has been unable to keep the Saints in the top tier.
Their relegation was confirmed at the weekend following their 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, with just ten points taken from their 31 games this season.
It’s been a miserable campaign for the former Gunners shot stopper, who has been relegated from the Premier League for the third time in his career with seven games remaining
The 26-year-old became somewhat of a fan favourite during his time with Arsenal, after being brought in as a replacement for Bernd Leno quickly proving himself as a safe pair of hands and a solid shop stopper.
Ramsdale picked up a respectable 89 appearances under Arteta, earning the respect of the fans leading to a call up by Gareth Southgate to the England squad.
To the surprise of some supporters, David Raya was brought in on loan from Brentford with Arteta wanting the two keepers to compete for the number one spot.
Raya established himself as Arteta’s number one, with Ramsdale keen on first team football and joined Southampton in a deal that included survival bonuses, which the Gunners will now miss out on.
For a keeper of his calibre and value, there will be no doubt Ramsdale will want to stay in the top flight with rumours linking him to Newcastle United and Leeds United in recent days, with the latter of the two clubs vying for promotion back to the Premier League.
The Englishman’s future is unclear but he may actually be returning to The Emirates sooner than first thought – with former club Bournemouth said to be among those eyeing up a move.
Reports that Andoni Iraola’s Cherries, who could sign two goalkeepers in the summer window, have identified Ramsdale as possible option – meaning a potential reunion on the south coast having already enjoyed a stint at the club from 2017 until 2020.
However, before a summer move can come to fruition, the former Arsenal man is set for another reunion with his former club as Arsenal head to St. Mary’s for the final game of the season.
Kicking off at 4pm on Sunday, May 25, the fixture is unlikely to affect the Premier League table with Liverpool boasting an 11 point gap to Arsenal in second – although it is highly likely Ramsdale will not have wanted to be facing his former club with relegation confirmed when he departed last year.
The goalkeeper gave an update on his future at Southampton following the club’s relegation back into the Championship at the weekend.
“We’ve still got eight games left and, as I said, it’s about finishing the season respectfully,” Ramsdale told The Daily Echo when asked about his future. “Whatever will be, will be.
“I could be here, I could be abroad, I could be on a different team. I’m 26, I want to play football, and if that means moving or staying to fulfil my dreams, then that would be it.
“This summer, I might get sold, or I might still be here. This season was all about playing. Ultimately, there wasn’t a plethora of clubs at the time [last summer] to have my pick from. I may find the club where I stay for 10 or 12 years, or I might have to dot around or knuckle down or go abroad.”
