Darwin Nunez will leave Liverpool in the summer transfer window despite being loved by the club’s fans, according to a pundit.

The striker has developed a reputation for missing big chances during his time at Anfield, which may yet prove costly in the current Premier League title

Nunez missed a huge chance to put Liverpool ten points clear at the top of the Premier League table on Wednesday (19 February), firing over late on with the goal gaping in a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

With that having become a regular trend for the Uruguay international since he joined from Benfica in the summer of 2022, Agbonlahor believes the striker’s time on Merseyside may soon be at end end.

Darwin Nunez tipped for Liverpool exit amid Newcastle United, Saudi Arabia links

Liverpool were tipped to sell Nunez in the January transfer window amid interest from Saudi Arabia, although no deal materialised.

Football Insider understands Nunez could also be offered to Newcastle as part of a swap deal with Alexander Isak heading in the opposite direction in the summer.

Agbonlahor has now suggested that amid that interest, and after squandering another big opportunity in front of goal against Aston Villa, it inevitable the striker will leave Anfield this summer.

Speaking on talkSPORT about Nunez‘s lack of composure in front of goal after what happened in midweek, ex-England international Gabby Agbonlahor said: “I just don’t think he’s got that (composure).

“That’s the problem, and I think Liverpool fans do love him, but they’ll understand that in January a Saudi team put a big bid in that Liverpool rejected, but I’m sure in the summer he will leave, for sure.”

Nunez still has three-and-a-half years remaining on his contract at Anfield, securing his future until the end of the 2027/28 season, meaning the club can demand a big fee for his sale.

Darwin Nunez sale make sense for Liverpool

Football Insider Verdict

Nunez’s commitment and desire to succeed for his side will undeniably have made him popular with fans, given effort is the bare minimum supporters expect from their players.

Ultimately though, the striker simply does not score enough goals or take enough chances for someone in his position playing for a side aiming to challenge for trophies in the way Liverpool are.

As a result, it would surely make sense to bring in other options who will be more reliable in front of goal, especially given the uncertainty around the future of the talismanic Mo Salah.

If they are to do that, Liverpool need to make space in the squad and budget for those potential incomings.

Given he would be one of those likely to be replaced in the side with his performances not up to scratch, selling Nunez to allow for those incomings would feel like the right move.
