Liverpool sit comfortably atop the Premier League and are fancied to progress far in the Champions League. However, there are long-term concerns to be addressed in terms of playing personnel, so here are some summer Liverpool transfer targets we think could future-proof their squad.

Liverpool transfer targets

Seamlessly transitioning from Jurgen Klopp to Arne Slot in the dugout, Liverpool have been the best side in Europe this season, but several key players have question marks over their futures, and could need replacing.

 

Most concerningly, Mo Salah is out of contract this summer, with the Egyptian hero recently stating there had been ‘no progress’.

 

Meanwhile, it looks certain that Trent Alexander-Arnold will depart for Real Madrid this summer, though Los Blancos have attempted to expedite that move. Virgil van Dijk also has only a matter of months left on his deal, but he is expected to sign eventually.

 

Elsewhere, it appears the ever-dependable Andy Robertson may finally need replacing, with the Scotsman beginning to slow down and Kostas Tsimikas not widely considered a sufficient deputy.

Anthony Gordon

Shockwaves were sent around English football when it was revealed Liverpool were in talks with Newcastle over signing Anthony Gordon last summer… and that the former Everton man was keen to join.

 

Gordon scored 11 and assisted 10 in the Premier League last season, and had an eye for the big occasions, with goals or assists against all of the top flight’s famed ‘Big Six’.

 

His searing pace, ball-carrying, end-product and knack for turning up when it matters most could go some way to helping the Reds replace Salah if and when the time comes. However, matters have been complicated by the Englishman’s new contract on Tyneside.

 

This new development will make Gordon’s acquisition potentially very, very expensive. The Reds are a determined side, however, and could well make an audacious return for Gordon.

 

In an interesting twist, the England winger has both given and taken away from the Reds in the title race lately.

 

He scored an equaliser against Manchester City and set up Alexander Isak’s winner against Arsenal to ensure Liverpool’s rivals dropped points, but also netted against the Reds at the start of December in their 3-3 draw up on Tyneside.

It now appears, however, that Gordon is not the only Liverpool target in black and white, with the Reds reportedly considering Alexander Isak as a potential Salah replacement.

 

The Sweden striker has made quite the impression on Liverpool this season, scoring once in their draw on Tyneside, and producing a superb finish to win the Magpies the Carabao Cup in March.

 

Isak is, of course, a striker, and not a one-to-one replacement for Salah, who has played the vast majority of his Liverpool minutes from the right wing.

 

Signing the 25-year-old would require a reworking of the Reds’ attack, but in terms of quality, there are few better attackers in the world than Isak right now. Indeed, he’s still well in contention for the PL’s top scorer award of 2024/25, breathing down the necks of Salah and Erling Haaland.

 

Arsenal have long been credited with an interest in Isak, with their links to him dating back three years. But according to insider reports, Liverpool are currently ‘best positioned’ to sign the hotshot striker. The Reds have been described as Isak’s ‘most persistent suitors’.

 

It is easy to see how Liverpool could potentially gazump the Gunners.

 

Most importantly, Arsenal likely need more than one attacker, limiting the resources they can expend on the striker. With Newcastle quoting a reported asking price of £150m, it would prevent the Gunners from fully refreshing their attack.

 

But compounding that, Liverpool can offer Isak status as the star man of a new-look side under Slot, whereas at Arsenal, there are still questions as to where he will fit in with the likes of Kai Havertz.

 

Bryan Mbeumo

A more straightforward replacement for Salah would be Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, who plays the right-wing role in a similar way to the Egyptian.

 

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. When looking at the best right-sided attackers in the Premier League, Salah ranks top, followed by Bukayo Saka. After the injury-stricken Englishman though, there is little argument that Mbeumo is the best in the role.

 

The Cameroonian is quick, smart, can beat a man, and possesses a devastating left boot. Mbeumo has gone from strength to strength at Brentford, with 15 goals and five assists so far this season, which is his best return yet.

 

Such has been the duration of his time at the G-Tech, supporters often forget that Mbeumo is just 25… the same age as Salah was when he arrived on Merseyside!

 

Mbeumo’s performances have also caught the eye of Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, who recently said “I’m a huge fan of his” in the aftermath of the Reds’ 2-0 win over Brentford on 18 January, which could easily have gone either way.

 

There’s little doubt Mbeumo would jump at the chance to move to Anfield. And with 18 months to run on his contract, he could be acquired for a reasonable fee too.

 

Antonee Robinson

Moving back into defence, Liverpool are fortunate to have a long-term replacement for Alexander-Arnold in Conor Bradley, but they do not have that luxury at left-back.

 

Fulham’s Antonee Robinson has been of considerable interest to the Reds, with the 27-year-old arguably the best left-back in the Premier League this season.

 

Blessed with extraordinary pace, the USA international is likely to finish high in the list of assist makers this term. And that doesn’t come at the cost of defensive integrity either, with the fleet-footed defender memorably keeping a red-hot Saka unusually quiet when the Cottagers met Arsenal in December.

 

Robinson has all the attributes to replicate the dynamic, dominant presence down the flank that Robertson did in his prime. Another boost for the Reds is that Manchester United’s pursuit of Robinson has likely ended, given their acquisition of Patrick Dorgu.

 

He will not come cheap, with Fulham reportedly asking £45m for the full-back. However, one potential solution for the Reds is using Tsimikas as a makeweight, with the Londoners reportedly interested in the Greek international.

David Hancko

One of Slot’s most trusted lieutenants at Feyenoord was Slovakian defender David Hancko.

 

With a shake-up likely on the cards at Anfield, Slot is reportedly set to make his case to Liverpool’s transfer committee that the talented defender should be brought to Merseyside.

 

Hancko is a left-footed centre-back much of the time, but is also capable of playing as an attacking left-back. The former Sparta Prague man is no stranger to forward contributions and scored away to Manchester City in the Champions League earlier this season.

 

The Feyenoord man could be a much-needed Swiss Army Knife in the Reds’ defence, able to cover for the aging Van Dijk (should he stay), or play alongside him as a left-back. A £29m fee has been quoted, very reasonable for a man of his talents.

 

We think a January move is unlikely, with Feyenoord having next to no time to find a replacement for such a key player. But in the summer? Liverpool may well raid De Kuip again.

 

Milos Kerkez

A Cherry ripe for the plucking is reportedly Milos Kerkez, who is an alternative to Robinson as a left-back target.

 

The 21-year-old Hungarian has started every match for Bournemouth going into deadline week, providing energy and creativity up and down the left flank, while holding his own defensively.

 

One big advantage of going for Kerkez over Robinson is his age – the former AZ Alkmaar man is six years younger than Robinson, setting Liverpool up better for the long term.

 

Kerkez is believed to be rated at around £50m, and Liverpool are believed to be the player’s preference. This is definitely one to watch when the season draws to a close, as it seems Liverpool have already begun laying the groundwork.

 

Dean Huijsen

Staying with Andoni Iraola’s side, another player Liverpool are reportedly weighing up a move for is Dean Huijsen.

 

Huijsen, 19, has been a revelation in the Premier League for Bournemouth this season, with the young centre-back quickly emerging as one of the most talented young players around.

 

The Spanish youth international is superb with the ball at his feet, quick and combative. He also has a penchant for a big goal, with headers against Tottenham and Manchester United in landmark Cherries wins this season.

 

Liverpool will have to compete with most of Europe’s top clubs, with his £50m release clause widely seen as a bargain.

 

However, the Reds can offer Huijsen the chance to learn from and play with one of the very best to ever do it in Van Dijk.

 

Fabrizio Romano has remarked on Liverpool’s “appreciation” for Huijsen in recent weeks, and we’d be shocked if the Reds don’t approach the wonderkid defender.

A recent wide target to emerge in Liverpool’s search for a potential replacement for Salah is Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens.

 

The 20-year-old winger, who was once on the books of both Chelsea and Manchester City in his youth, has made good on his potential this season, with 11 goals in all competitions, including an impressive four in the Champions League.

 

Gittens’ newfound nose for goal has not diminished his wide play, however. The Englishman is electric in one-on-one scenarios thanks to a near-perfect set of attributes.

 

Firstly, Gittens is blisteringly fast, putting fear into defenders. Secondly, he has the ability to go inside or outside in a manner not dissimilar to Saka. Finally, his box of tricks is vast, allowing him to bamboozle opponents.

 

Gittens is developing into a truly complete winger this season, despite Dortmund’s inconsistencies.

 

A move for the winger will be pricy, with Dortmund slapping an £85m price tag on Gittens, and Chelsea also monitoring their former youngster. However, Gittens could play with Salah if he stays, or step up to be the star in his absence.

Whisper+ hot rumour

One development we can see gaining momentum in the coming weeks is Liverpool’s interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong. With Alexander-Arnold having one foot out the door, Liverpool need to find a replacement, which is no mean feat.

 

Alexander-Arnold is a force of nature in the final third, and the Reds are unlikely to find a direct replacement for his unparalleled technique when delivering the ball into the box.

 

Frimpong has been one of Europe’s most productive right-sided defenders for several seasons now, scoring 14 and assisting 10 as Leverkusen romped to the Bundesliga title.

 

While Alexander-Arnold carves open defences with his wand of a right boot, Frimpong takes an alternate approach.

 

The Dutchman is blisteringly quick, and can beat almost anybody one-on-one. He has boundless energy, a perfect fit for Slot’s intense brand of football.

 

Frimpong could join the growing Oranje contingent on Merseyside. Along with Slot, he could join international teammates Van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravebnerch at Anfield.
