The storm looks set to cause chaos across the country with extreme weather conditions expected. It is likely to also impact train services affecting supporters making their way to matches.

The Met Office has issued yellow severe weather warning for parts of England with some now escalating to a more serious red warning. Winds gusts in some areas are expected to reach up to 80mph.

An amber warning has been placed on the western coast of England, including parts of Liverpool, which stands for most of Saturday. That of course, includes when the Merseyside Derby between Everton and Liverpool will be played at Goodison Park.

The storm has already seen two EFL games be postponed, with Cardiff City vs Watford and Plymouth Argyle vs Oxford United not going ahead due to the severe weather conditions.

FA Wales statement

The Welsh FA have announced that all domestic football matches due to take place in Wales on Saturday have been postponed, following advice from the Met Office.

In a stement, then wrote:

“Following advice from The Met Office, the Football Association of Wales can confirm that all football matches in Wales scheduled for Saturday 7 December have been postponed.

“The Met Office has issued Red, Amber, and Yellow Weather Warnings for the vast majority of Wales due to Storm Darragh, which is expected to bring damaging winds and heavy rain, causing significant disruption and danger to life.

“It is not safe to drive in such weather, including travelling to and from football matches. Being outside in high winds increases the risk of injury and The Met Office advises people to stay indoors if possible.

“Clubs have been advised to check for and secure any loose items around their grounds if it can be done safely. This includes bins, furniture, goalposts, and fences etc.

“Potential postponements of fixtures on Friday 6 December and Sunday 8 December will be considered on a case-by-case basis, in line with each individual league’s policy.”

Non League games postponed

Cheadle Town have confirmed that their North West Counties League clash against AFC Liverpool has been postponed due to safety concerns.

Tonight’s clash between Charnock Richard and Burscough was also called off earlier today.

One game not impacted

The Football League weekend kicks off tonight, with the Championship fixture between Burnley and Middlesbrough going ahead as expected.

Kick-off was at 8pm, it will be interesting to see what impact the conditions have on the left

Train cancellations

Merseyrail have announced the cancellation of some services tomorrow.

The operator said: “Due to flooding on the network in the Ledsham area, there will be no trains running between Chester and Hooton on Saturday December 7, a rail replacement bus will be in operation. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

More generally, the operator is urging people to check its website, app and social media for updates over the weekend as the storm could affect more services. The statement added: “Storm Darragh is expected to cause significant rainfall and high winds across the region over the weekend Saturday 7 – Sunday 8 December.

Another game gone

It has been confirmed that the FA Trophy match between Torquay United and Horsham has not been postponed. The clash will instead be played on Tuesday night.

In a statement, they wrote:

“With South Devon bracing itself for the arrival of Storm Darragh this weekend, and following consultation with both the Safety Advisory Group and Horsham FC, Saturday’s Isuzu FA Trophy tie at Plainmoor has been postponed.

“Although the hard work of our ground staff had given the pitch every chance of remaining playable, the prospect of winds of up to 80mph hitting the area has provided serious cause for concern, especially for those making the journey down from West Sussex.

“With the safety of both sets of players, supporters and officials remaining everyone’s number one priority, the decision has been made to postpone this game, with the match now taking place on Tuesday 10th December instead (7.45pm KO).”

Everton and Liverpool issue joint statement

Both Everton and Liverpool have released a joint statement on Friday evening ahead of the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

“Supporters attending Saturday’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park are advised to allow extra time for travel, and to remain alert to Met Office weather warnings.

“An amber severe wind warning has been issued by the Met Office for Merseyside from 1am on Saturday morning, with wind gusts of 60mph to 70mph likely. That warning for wind is expected to remain in place until 6am on Sunday. Given the weather warning, fans are advised to allow extra time for their journey and to take extra care.

“Fans are also advised to keep a close eye on travel and weather guidance in their area to assist with travel planning for Saturday’s Premier League fixture (12:30pm kick-off).”
