The Premier League were quick to issue two statements on Liverpool’s second goal against Leicester and a disallowed third after initial confusion led to a lengthy VAR checks.
The Reds were heavy favourites going into the Boxing Day clash with the Foxes as they looked to extend their lead at the top of the table, seeking to capitalise on Chelsea’s defeat at home to Fulham earlier in the day.
However, the hosts fell behind to Jordan Ayew’s opening goal for the struggling Foxes, who took the lead after just six minutes at a foggy Anfield. Liverpool rallied though, and levelled through Cody Gakpo’s fine strike just before half-time.
It was just after the break that the Reds then took the lead through Curtis Jones, who slotted in from close range after being found by a centre from Alexis Mac Allister. However, there was an element of controversy to the goal.
It had initially appeared as though Mo Salah was in an offside position in the build-up, but after the positions of both the Egyptian and Virgil van Dijk were painstakingly scrutinised, the goal from Jones – who was clearly onside – stood.
The Premier League said in a statement via their official Twitter/X account: “The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by the VAR as Salah was in an onside position in the build-up.”
