A raging Diego Simeone was sent off after he was embroiled in a heated exchange with a Liverpool fan in Atletico Madrid’s 3-2 defeat at Anfield on Wednesday night. Arne Slot’s men left it late once again to grab a winner courtesy of a superb Virgil van Dijk header in the 90+2nd minute.

Van Dijk and his teammates were busy celebrating when Simeone lost his head and was seen getting heated with a supporter. His staff and stewards tried pulling him away before he marched back to his touchline, where he was greeted with a red card.

Simeone had managed to curb his temper for most of the game but couldn’t control his emotions in stoppage time as the Reds took all three points. The Argentine wasn’t present to shake hands with Arne Slot which was once an issue between the pair years ago.

Drama is becoming the norm for the Kop, and they likely expected their troops to get the job done despite Atleti finding a way back into the game. They raced into a two-nil lead after Andy Robertson deflected Mohamed Salah’s free-kick past Jan Oblak and the Egyptian found the net himself.

But Marcos Llorente has a habit of netting at the Reds’ stomping ground and the Spaniard bagged a brace to level matters. That was until Van Dijk came up trumps, thumping a header past Oblak and ensuring his side remain perfect in all competitions.

There was nothing perfect about Simeone’s conduct on the touchline in the aftermath of the goal, clearly upset with a section of home fans. He was seen trying to point something out to referee Maurizio Mariani but eventually accepted his fate and headed down the tunnel.

No doubt the fan seen screaming at the Argentine will savour that moment and perhaps even hang the image up on his wall. There’s no word on what was said between the pair but it was enough to irate the 55-year-old.
