Football players and fans were elft in shock on Thursday, July 3rd after news broke of the tragic death of Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva in a horrific car crash in northern Spain.

The tragedy unfolded in the early hours in the province of Zamora, where their vehicle veered off the road and caught fire.

In a heartbreaking visual Rute Jota, the wife of the 27-year-old footballer, was seen crying outside the morgue. British media outlet Mirror.co.uk stated that she was the one who formally identified her husband.

The couple, childhood sweethearts, had only recently tied the knot during a brief summer break. Rute had posted a photo from their wedding on social media with the caption “Yes to forever.” Their fairytale was cut tragically short just ten days after their marriage. The couple shared three young children, the youngest of whom was born last year.

Diogo Jota’s career

Jota had been enjoying time off after a grueling season in which he helped Liverpool secure the Premier League title. His final game was for Portugal in the UEFA Nations League Final against Spain on June 8 in Munich.

The forward, who joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers, scored 65 goals in 182 matches for the club and was widely admired for his versatility and work ethic. His last goal for the Reds came in April a crucial winner in the Merseyside derby against Everton.

His brother André Silva had been playing in the Portuguese lower leagues for Penafiel.

Jota’s funeral is expected to take place this Saturday in Porto, Portugal, where friends, fans, and fellow players will gather to bid farewell
