The EFL had to issue a clarification following a controversial moment in Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg clash with Arsenal this evening. The Magpies, already 2-0 up from the first-leg at the Emirates Stadium, thought they had scored in the early minutes of the match.

Anthony Gordon’s skillful assist put Alexander Isak in prime position and the Swedish striker maintained his composure as he has all season, slotting the ball into the net. Isak’s firm shot left Gunners goalkeeper David Raya no chance, sparking wild celebrations at St James’ Park.

However, the jubilation was short-lived due to an extensive VAR review. Referee Simon Hooper then conveyed to the fans that Isak had been offside during the play.

The replay footage confirmed that Isak’s shoulder had edged past the final defender.

Hooper announced: “After review, the goalscorer, Newcastle’s number 14, is in an offside position. The restart is indirect free-kick for offside,” reports Chronicle Live.

This incident marked only the second time in English football history that a referee has addressed the stadium crowd directly, following Stuart Atwell’s precedent-setting move during Liverpool’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham last month.

Commentator Gary Neville added his thoughts, saying: “It’s the first time I have seen that live. “Who’d be a referee?

“My goodness. “If you wanted to make referees more unpopular, let them announce a disallowed goal.”

The English Football League subsequently issued a statement providing more information. They said: “Isak’s goal was initially awarded on-field.

“VAR checked and determined that he was in an offside position and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”
