Viktor Gyokeres has named the three Arsenal players he has been most impressed by as the Sporting striker attempts to force a summer move to the Gunners.
The striker is Mikel Arteta’s No1 attacking target this summer, and both teams have been in talks for a number of weeks over a deal.
Sporting are holding out for £70million, though Gyokeres remains convinced he had an agreement with Sporting president Frederico Varandas that he would be sold for around £59m. Varandas has denied any such agreement, prompting Gyokeres to go on strike and fail to report to training on Friday.
Standard Sport understands that there is a desire among all parties to get the deal done.
Gyokeres, speaking to L’Equipe earlier this week in an interview published on Saturday, said of transfer speculation over his future: “That’s football, you never know. I don’t think about it; we’ll see what happens. If something happens, it will. The most important thing for me is to play for a club that really wants me.”
Asked about moving to the Premier League amid Arsenal’s confirmed interest, Gyokeres added: “It’s one of the biggest leagues in Europe. I spent several years [in England with Championship side Coventry] without being able to play a single match. So, of course, it’s something I’d like to do. It would be great revenge!”
Viktor Gyokeres faced Arsenal last season
Gyokeres was not asked directly by Arsenal during the interview, but took up the opportunity to name-check some of his possible future team-mates when asked if any players have impressed him of late.
“Yes, definitely,” he replied. “Especially at English clubs. “Midfielders like Bernardo Silva and [Mateo] Kovacic at [Manchester] City, or [Bukayo] Saka at Arsenal are impressive to watch.
“I’ve also faced very high-level defenders, like [Arsenal duo] Gabriel and [William] Saliba. It’s a chance to play against those kinds of players.”
