Liverpool’s former throw-in coach Thomas Gronnemark has declared himself open to a return to the club to coach an area that is becoming increasingly important in football.
The art of the throw-in – and particularly the long throw – has become one of the key narratives of this season’s Premier League.
That was no more apparent than in Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Brentford, which saw Liverpool concede within five minutes after struggling to deal with one of Michael Kayode’s throw-ins.
It is an area Liverpool are yet to capitalise on themselves, but Arne Slot has already recognised on a number of occasions the growing value of set-pieces in the top flight.
There is an irony, then, that the Premier League champions were one of the first clubs to appoint a specialist throw-in coach – Gronnemark – in 2018.

In a reply to one supporter on X last week, the 49-year-old declared himself “open” to a return as part of Slot’s backroom team.
“They are always welcome to call me,” Gronnemark wrote. “I’m open for (almost) all teams.”
In another, he described himself as “always ready to help,” while the Dane recently shared an article from This Is Anfield highlighting the impact he had made months after his arrival.
“Some people don’t remember, at Liverpool FC I worked with the fast and clever throw-in – and took the team from 18th to first on throw-in possession under pressure,” he explained.
“Just because I had the longest throw-in in the world doesn’t mean I only coach the long throw-in!”
Gronnemark’s impact at Liverpool
Gronnemark had worked for the likes of Midtjylland, Horsens and Viborg prior to his arrival on Merseyside and has since coached at Brentford, Dortmund, Trabzonspor, Antalyaspor and Philadelphia Union among others.
Speaking to reporters in September 2018, Andy Robertson praised the influence he had on his throw-ins – including an increase on the lengths he could reach.
“We are switched on when it comes to throw-ins – everyone is in better positions that we are finding easier, and the lads’ techniques have got better,” the left-back said.
“We all got measured and I was one of the worst, but since the day he came in until now I think I’ve gained about six metres.

“We have all bought into it and we are all improving and are a lot more accurate. I think it is a positive things and it has definitely worked for us.”
Gronnemark left the club in 2023 after the decision was made not to renew his contract – with Jurgen Klopp then departing at the end of the following season.

This time, Spanish outlets have claimed Klopp is being considered as the heir to Diego Simeone’s throne at Atletico. This would be an interesting turn of events, considering Simeone was sent off at Anfield in September and had to be dragged away from Liverpool supporters next to his dugout, after the Reds’ won 3-2 in the Champions League.

In the summer, Simeone will enter the final year of his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano. However, Spanish television show El Chiringuito has claimed Klopp is in advanced negotiations about succeeding the Argentine.
They claim Klopp is speaking with Mark Rowan, who is the CEO of Atletico majority shareholders, Apollo. Considering how firmly Red Bull rejected the recent rumours around Klopp, they may be equally surprised by these reports from Spain.
