Live score updates, analysis and commentary from Deepdale as Liverpool take on Preston North End in their first pre-season friendly and match since Diogo Jota died
Preston and Liverpool players observe a minute’s silence for Liverpool’s late Portuguese striker #20 Diogo Jota during the pre-season friendly football match between Preston North End and Liverpool at Deepdale stadium
Liverpool return to action today in their first pre-season friendly of the summer, against Preston North End at Deepdale Stadium. It will be an emotional afternoon for Arne Slot’s side, who play their first game since the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota 10 days ago.
The Portuguese died along with his brother Andre Silva when the car they were driving through Spain veered off the road following a tyre blowout. What followed was an outpouring of grief from across the football world as Liverpool delayed their pre-season preparations so that team-mates, staff and friends could attend the funeral in Gondomar, Portugal.
Liverpool eventually returned to training on Tuesday, before consulting with players and staff to decide on whether this game would go ahead. The club also announced the retirement of the number 20 shirt which Jota wore.
The match will, then, go ahead, with both clubs planning to pay tribute to Jota and Silva before the game. Supporters attending the match have been asked to be in their seats by 2.45pm ahead of the 3pm kick-off as a mark of respect to the brothers, with tributes then getting underway at roughly 2.50pm.

Claudia Rose Maguire – wife of former Preston player Sean – will first sing a rendition of Can’t Help Falling In Love, which will then be followed by Liverpool’s anthem of You’ll Never Walk Alone.
While the latter is sung, North End captain Ben Whiteman will lay a wreath in front of the visiting supporters in the Bill Shankly Kop, ahead of a minute’s silence just before kick-off.
The ECHO will be at Deepdale for live updates and coverage of the tributes, before we turn our attentions to the match and debuts of summer signings such as Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong. There will be live commentary, score updates and analysis, but all the TV channel and streaming information you need.

Good save from Woodman
Good save from Woodman as he gets down low to deny Jebbison. Ball bounces up and hits the top of the bar. Little bit fortunate but the keeper deserved it.
16:36Theo Squires
Penalty appeals waved away
Doak pulled down in the box but nothing given. Away support not happy with that.
16:35Theo Squires
Scramble
Bit of a goalmouth scramble in the Preston box as Endo and Jones both have shots blocked.
16:27Ian Doyle
Drinks break
Liverpool’s defence has had a bit more work to do this half but they are keeping Preston at bay.
Gakpo looks pretty lively down the left for the visitors.
Frimpong and Kerkez have both had a few nice moments.
There are 21,289 in there today.

Fitting celebration
Nunez rounds the goalkeeper, sidefoots home and then celebrates with Diogo Jota’s gamer celebration – earning loud cheers in the process.

Preston push
Osmajic with the best chance for Preston as he gets a toe poke on a cross from the left at the near post but directs it wide. Was stretching a bit, to be fair.

Smart play from Chiesa as he gets in a low cross, Szoboszlai gets a touch to it and Bradley is on hand to sidefoot home at the far post.

Szoboszlai shoots
Liverpool win a corner.
The ball is cleared as far as Szoboszlai on the edge of the area, with the midfielder having a powerful shot that is blocked. That was on the way in.
15:27Ian Doyle
Drinks break over
The Liverpool fans are still singing the Jota song. The home crowd joined in with the clapping for several minutes earlier.
15:23Ian Doyle
Ngumoha again
Ngumoha, who has looked very lively, has another shot blocked after breaking into the area off the left.
We are now having a drinks break.
15:20Ian Doyle
Chiesa opportunity
Chiesa races away on goal but is tackled inside the area. He retrieves the ball then sends an ambitious curler wide of the far post.
That all came in the 20th minute, during which the travelling Kop broke out in song saluting their forever number 20, Diogo Jota.
15:18Ian Doyle
Ngumoha effort
A great turn and pass from Gravenberch finds Ngumoha, who cuts into the box past a few defenders and has a shot deflected behind.
Nothing comes of the corner.
15:16Ian Doyle
Youngsters making mark
Ngumoha as had a few runs down the left flank and Liverpool’s players aren’t afraid to feed him the ball often.
Nyoni, in a deeper midfield role, has just shown some good positional sense and like Ngumoha appears to have physically grown over the summer.
Stephenson, meanwhile, has been impressive at centre-back and has clearly benefited from a season on loan as a regular with Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership.
15:13Ian Doyle
Preston on the attack
Preston have fashioned the first real effort with Gibson striking wide from range.
Liverpool have responded by upping the tempo and are now looking livelier in attack.
15:08Ian Doyle
Preston threat
Liverpool have had almost all the ball thus far but it is Preston who had the first sight of goal of any sort.
Tsimikas has to deal with a cross from the left and just about to nudges it away at the far post.
15:05Ian Doyle
Game underway
We’ve been playing a few minutes now.
Stephenson as expected is at left-back, with Nyoni in one of the three midfield roles.
Szoboszlai at present looks the more advanced, though.
14:43Ian Doyle
The Jota chant
A first airing of what is likely to be many renditions of the Diogo Jota chant has just come from the away end.
The Liverpool players are about to wrap up their preparations ahead of the friendly. It’s a very, very warm day here.
14:32Ian Doyle
Fans gathering
There have been a large collection of Liverpool supporters around the stadium and now they are starting to file in.
There will be a series of tributes before the game celebrating Diogo Jota and Andre Silva – and it is certain the travelling Kop will have their own special tributes planned.
14:08Theo Squires
Liverpool absentees
So no Florian Wirtz for Liverpool today, and no Alisson, Van Dijk, Konate, Diaz and Mac Allister.
Harvey Elliott and Tyler Morton also miss out as they’re not back in training yet, while Stefan Bajcetic is injured.

Welcome to Deepdale
Hello there from Preston.
As Theo says, an emotional day awaits.
And it is undoubtedly going to be a difficult one for the Liverpool players for a number of reasons. Not least remembering their former colleague while attempting to start focusing their minds on the future.

Forever number 20
Hello everybody. It’s going to be an emotional day at Deepdale today.
The stadium had barely come into sight when I saw my first Diogo Jota shirt of the day. It has not been the last.
Preston have put together a really nice tribute programme in honour of the Portuguese, while there are a number of tributes planned ahead of kick-off.

Diogo Jota tributes planned
There will be a number of Diogo Jota tributes throughout this match, with it set to be an emotional occasion for all those involved.
During the minute’s silence, digital tributes will be displayed on the big screen and across LEDs at Deepdale.
Both sets of players will also wear black armbands in honour of Jota and Silva, who was a player at Penafiel.
Preston have also created a commemorative edition of the matchday programme that features written tributes to the brothers.
The 16-page matchday programme will be free to all supporters with a match ticket on the day. There will be multiple members of staff around the ground handing out the programmes.

What to look out for this afternoon
As mentioned earlier, these pre-season friendlies are often very interesting, with new signings getting their first chance of a runout, fringe players featuring and different tactics trialled.
Helpfully, Theo Squires has put together a piece looking at the different things to lookout for today when you’re tuning it to watch the game
