Liverpool are favourites for the Premier League

Liverpool travel to Man City in February

Liverpool’s next five fixtures may not be the most challenging on paper but certainly have the capacity to spring a few surprises. The simplest of the bunch appears to be their home meeting with struggling Ipswich Town, who are next up in the Premier League following a Champions League visit from Lille.

After their final Champions League league phase clash with PSV Eindhoven, Liverpool make the long trip to the south coast to face Bournemouth. The Reds have won their last two visits to the Vitality Stadium but did suffer a frustrating defeat in March 2023 – Mohamed Salah missing from the spot in a 1-0 loss the week after Liverpool had beat Manchester United 7-0.

The rearranged Merseyside derby is scheduled for Wednesday 12 February, with the previous fixture postponed due to adverse weather conditions. Everton, who are once again under the guidance of David Moyes, always pose a fierce challenge for the Reds at Goodison Park, with nine of the last 12 such meetings ending in draws.

A home clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers should prove a relatively routine victory for Liverpool but their subsequent journey to reigning champions Manchester City promises to be significantly tougher. The Cityzens are in incredibly patchy form but still retain plenty of star quality, with Liverpool having failed to win any of their past eight visits to the Etihad Stadium.

Sandwiched in between Arsenal’s remaining two Champions League league phase fixtures comes a trip to Wolves in the Premier League. The Gunners have won their last seven meetings with the Old Gold, including a 2-0 triumph at the Emirates Stadium on the opening day of the season.

Things get more challenging for Arsenal the following weekend, however, as they also prepare for a duel with Man City. Having drawn in dramatic circumstances at the Etihad back in September – ten-man Arsenal conceding in the 98th minute – the Gunners will be seeking a confidence-boosting victory against the misfiring Cityzens.

Following the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, Arsenal journey to the East Midlands. Facing off with Ruud van Nistelrooy’s struggling Leicester City, the Gunners will want to extend their six-game winning run against the Foxes.

Arsenal have scored 11 times in their last two matches with West Ham United but actually lost their most recent home clash with the Irons last season. A defeat that proved pivotal in the Premier League title race, Arsenal will be aiming to avoid a similar upset as they tangle with Liverpool in this year’s fight for first.

Victory is even more significant against the Hammers considering a trip to high-flying Nottingham Forest follows. The Midlands side have been in exceptional form and have taken four points from meetings with Liverpool this term. They may have won 3-0 at the Emirates in November, but the Gunners will endure a much tougher assignment at the City Ground.
