As the most lucrative league in the world, the Premier League is always bound to witness its clubs spend vast sums of money on strengthening their squads in order to achieve their goals in what is the most competitive division in the beautiful game.

 

It is common practice for millions to be spent – and even wasted – on players, but some clubs are going above and beyond this summer with their new additions and the amounts they are having to part with to secure them. And as the window shut, seven clubs finished with a profitable net spend, while others spent money like there was no tomorrow

The bottom five have the healthiest bank balances so far this summer in regard to their budgets, as they are rolling in the dough thanks to some major outgoings. Bournemouth sit bottom, with manager Andoni Iraola being rewarded for his fine season last time out by watching his star players depart. Dean Huijsen moved to Real Madrid, while Milos Kerkez departed for Liverpool in two of the biggest deals of the window. The same can also be said for Brighton, who are yet to spend the £60 million they recouped for Joao Pedro, who has since made an immediate impact at Chelsea.

 

The final two in the bottom five both have Manchester United to thank for their current standing. Brentford and Wolves lost both Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to the Old Trafford outfit, and things got even better – or worse, depending on how you view it – for the Bees when they caved into Yoane Wissa’s demands and sold him to Newcastle. That doesn’t include the money they earned in compensation when Thomas Frank left to join Tottenham, either.

 

And then comes the most surprising team on this list. With the amount of money Chelsea spend, you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who would’ve believed that the Blues would finish the window making a profit. And yet, the last-minute loan deal to send Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich with an outrageous obligation to buy has done just that.

Just two other teams in the Premier League have made a profit with their spending – and it’s by some slight margins. Crystal Palace were forced to wave goodbye to Eberechi Eze, which is ultimately the main reason they ended up in the green. It was also apparent that they were prepared to see Marc Guehi leave too, but his collapsed move to Liverpool prevented any more money being spent or recouped.

 

Aston Villa, also made a profit in what was a rather uninspired window for Unai Emery’s side. They did at least secure deals for Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho on deadline day, but whether either prove to be the masterstroke some hope for is anyone’s guess.

 

There had not been much activity for Fulham up until the very end of the window when they finally secured a deal for Brazilian winger Kevin. This was enough to make them the first team to enter the minus number. Burnley, meanwhile, haven’t been afraid to splash the cash, with their near £100m expenditure giving them a net spend of more than £66 million.

 

West Ham have Mohamed Kudus to thank for his move to Tottenham for the majority of their incomings. With pressure on Graham Potter, he will be hoping his new recruits can hit the ground running.

As we enter the top half, we start to see serious money being spent, with Manchester City sitting slap bang in the middle of the table. Pep Guardiola’s early business may now be going under the radar, but the deal sheets certainly haven’t ignored it, with their business being capped off by the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

 

Then there’s Newcastle. On deadline day, they agreed a deal with Liverpool to sell Alexander Isak for a British record fee. And while that could’ve left them in the green, they wasted no time spending that money. Nick Woltemade joined before the Isak deal, although Eddie Howe may have known what was about to happen, while Yoane Wissa also made his much-touted switch to take their outgoings beyond £250 million.

 

Nuno Espirito Santo demanded new signings ahead of the first Premier League weekend of the season and Evangelos Marinakis certainly delivered, seeing Nottingham Forest shoot up the net spend leaderboard. While newly promoted Leeds also feature prominently having not made a single penny this window.

 

David Moyes and Everton come sixth, after a late flurry of business. There can be no doubt that the headline act for the Toffees has been Jack Grealish, who has been nothing short of exceptional thus far, managing four assists in two starts.

The top five consist of three teams using their Champions League money, one that will be bitterly disappointed not to have that extra boost to spend, but more miraculously, a newly promoted side in Sunderland. The Black Cats have spent big to prepare for life back in the top flight, with Granit Xhaka the pick of the signings. And two wins from the opening three games is certainly a promising start.

 

Tottenham endured a poor domestic campaign last time and will hope that the aforementioned Kudus and other arrivals such as Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani help change their fortunes under Thomas Frank.

 

Manchester United did what they usually do this window – dilly dally over certain deals and struggle to get rid of the deadwood until the very last minute. They concluded their business by signing Senne Lammens over Emiliano Martinez to take their net spend to just over £170 million.

 

Premier League champions Liverpool spent next to nothing strengthening the squad that lifted the title last season but have gone from that to being the biggest spenders in the division, as Arne Slot looks to grab a stranglehold on the top prize. However, it’s Arsenal topping this table for a change. Liverpool’s sales of Jarell Quansah and Luis Diaz have helped reduce the Reds’ overall outlay, which is why the Gunners currently sit at the summit.
