Kevin De Bruyne has ruled out a move to Arsenal as he prepares to leave Manchester City this summer after ten years at the club.

The Belgian midfielder’s deal at the Etihad Stadium will expire at the end of June, and he will leave as a free agent. Arsenal are the team De Bruyne has faced most often in his career, and in 22 appearances against the Gunners, he has recorded 14 wins, eight goals, and five assists.

City’s decision not to renew his contract took him by surprise, putting the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea on red alert. “There was a little bit (of shock),” De Bruyne admitted.

“I didn’t have any offer from them through the whole year, and the club made a decision. Obviously, I was a bit surprised, but I have to accept it. Honestly, I still think I can perform at this level like I’m showing, but I understand that clubs have to make decisions.”

At the time, Liverpool star Mohamed Salah cheekily suggested his club could be the next destination for De Bruyne. “I want to tell him congratulations for your career,” Salah told Sky Sports.

“He’s done a phenomenal job at City, and he was great for the league. I really wish him the best…and we have a space for him!”

However, The Telegraph has since claimed that there is no possibility of him joining a Premier League rival. This comes after De Bruyne’s farewell speech after City’s 3-1 home win against Bournemouth last Tuesday.

“Manchester is home, Manchester is where these little kids were born,” the midfielder said. “I came here with my wife, Michelle, to stay for a long time, didn’t expect to be here 10 years. To do what we’ve done as a club, supporters, teammates we’ve won everything. We made the city, the club bigger and now they’re going to take over.”

David Ornstein of The Athletic has since provided an update on his potential next destination. “He has no decision so far on what he’s going to do next – expect that maybe within the next four weeks,” he told CBS Sports.

“I think it’s unlikely he’ll play at the Club World Cup for Manchester City, he’s got a couple of World Cup qualifiers with Belgium to focus on and then we’ll see where he ends up next.

“There’s opportunities in the MLS, in Europe, Napoli in particular, Turkey too, also in Saudi Arabia. The Premier League would hold possibilities but I think that’s unlikely on his behalf. There were suggestions of Liverpool but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

“I don’t think he would want to play against Manchester City in the future. The MLS is probably the most likely outcome as things stand. I think Chicago Fire are in pole position for him – they have the discovery rights, it’s a really interesting project and it would represent a great life in an amazing sporting city so watch this space on that one.”

In 421 appearances, to date, De Bruyne has scored 108 goals and provided 177 assists.

He has also won six Premier League titles, the Champions League, a Club World Cup, two FA Cups, and five Carabao Cups.
