Sky Sports’ Lewis Jones:

 

David Moyes is one of the best pound-for-pound managers in English football. Of that there is no doubt.

 

But his away record against the big boys – notably Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City – it’s dreadful. And this weekend, that’s the big red elephant in the room for Everton. Since taking the West Ham job, Moyes has managed a team 19 times away at those three big clubs and has been beaten 18 times.

 

There’s lots of talk about renewed hope, a more attack-minded game plan and potentially a charge towards the European places, but it’s really difficult to see how Moyes’ approach at Anfield is going to lead to any points being banked.

 

Everton will give it their all on derby day, of course, and will be tough to break down, but Liverpool to win and under 3.5 goals at 11/8 with Sky Bet is a fantastic price to attack.

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones is fit again and returns to the squad after missing the last two matches. Head coach Arne Slot has to decide whether to give British record signing Alexander Isak his second start in three days as he continues to build up his fitness following his move from Newcastle.

 

Everton defenders Jarrad Branthwaite and Vitalii Mykolenko are still working their way back to fitness from thigh injuries and are unlikely to be involved. That means midfielder James Garner will have to continue to deputise at left-back.

It’s set up for an intriguing Merseyside derby.

 

Liverpool have a perfect record so far this season with four wins from four games but they haven’t been overly convincing. They’ve needed late goals in every game to get over the line and Everton will be eyeing the chance to put Arne Slot’s side to the test once again.

Slot praises Grealish’s Everton form

 

Liverpool manager Arne Slot had high praise for Jack Grealish and David Moyes’ Everton side ahead of Saturday’s Merseyside derby.

 

“When we played [Everton] last season they had a very good spell – that kept going into this season.

 

“They’ve made some very good signings – one of them someone paid 100 million for, and he’s doing so well for them in Jack Grealish.

 

“They have many good players – I don’t know what they’re going to do. Last season it was more long balls, whereas this season it’s a lot more passing football.

 

“The focus should be on the rivalry but also what we need to do to win – playing well with and without the ball.”

Beto pays tribute to Jota ahead of Merseyside derby

 

Everton striker Beto returns to Anfield on Saturday two months after laying flowers in memory of Diogo Jota on a day when he witnessed first-hand the togetherness of the city’s two clubs.

 

The Lisbon-born 27-year-old was part of a Toffees delegation which paid their tributes following the shocking news of the death of the Liverpool forward in July.

 

It was particularly poignant for Beto as Jota was the first person to make contact with him when he secured his move to Everton in August 2023.

 

“We were not friends, but you know, when you play against Portuguese players and everything, we normally speak a little bit,” said the striker.

 

“You have Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, these guys, but when I signed for Everton, he (Jota) was the first guy who texted me.

 

“He just said: ‘I’m happy for you. If you need anything on the city, everything, I can help you, just give me a shout’.

 

“After every game we played against Liverpool we’d talk a little bit so when Everton showed the interest for me to go to the stadium, I said: ‘I go, I go’ – not just because he was Portuguese and we understand each other but he was a really nice person, humble.

 

“I saw a togetherness between Everton and Liverpool. Not between clubs, but more between fans, you know?

 

“A lot of Everton fans were sad because even if he’s a rival, life is more than football.”

Slot: Ekitike and Isak could play together

 

Arne Slot has teased the idea of playing new strikers Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak together in the future.

 

Speaking in his press conference before Saturday’s Merseyside derby against Everton, the Dutchman emphasised the importance of his team’s structure, but maintained he could be flexible.

 

“I’ll consider [playing Ekitike and Isak together], because, of course you consider many things and it depends how well they’re doing. So if they’re both in the best form of their lives you would consider it more.

 

“It’s also clear that we have a certain structure – 4-3-3 with three midfielders – but in the end of games we’ve played with two nines. Hugo can also play from the left in a different way than Cody and Rio.

 

“First of all they have to stay fit. Right now I can pick everyone. But if they aren’t we could play 4-4-2.”
