Xavi Simons breaks silence as door opens to Liverpool transfer this summer

Xavi Simons has had his say on his future, with an exit from RB Leipzig looking possible this summer as Liverpool could be in the race for his signature

Xavi Simons has broken his silence on his future

Xavi Simons has left the door open to a summer transfer, with Liverpool said to be among the clubs looking at the RB Leipzig winger.

The Reds are of course on the verge of winning the Premier League title, and could be crowned champions on Wednesday if Arsenal loses against Crystal Palace. Nevertheless, Arne Slot will have work to do on his squad during the upcoming transfer window, with some areas in clear need of upgrades.

The Liverpool boss has been spared one pressing transfer need after Mohamed Salah signed a new two-year contract. With doubts still lingering over Federico Chiesa though, a new winger might still be on the shopping list.

Simons could well be an option, especially if Liverpool wants a long-term heir in place for Salah. At just 22, the Netherlands international still has his best years ahead of him, having already impressed plenty of clubs with his performances in the Bundesliga.

Despite only making his move to Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain permanent in January, a summer exit is already being touted. According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool and Manchester United are among a host of clubs keen on Simons, with a departure said to be possible.

Leipzig would demand around $92 million for his signature, given he is under contract until 2027. Simons though isn’t making any guarantees over his future, would could give Liverpool and others some encouragement.

“I’m still a young player, I have many dreams – and the club knows that,” Simons told Sky Germany. “But right now, the most important thing for me is to play well in the upcoming games. Then we have the international matches, and after that we’ll sit down and see what happens

Simons has 10 goals and six assists to his name from 29 appearances for Leipzig this season, having sat out nearly two months earlier in the campaign with an ankle injury. He is also a regular starter for the Netherlands, where he is of course teammates with Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, having picked up 26 caps.

Liverpool.com says: $92 million would be a lot to spend on an area that isn’t really a priority anymore. Liverpool could do with finding a long-term heir to Salah, but that is going to be low on the list this summer.

Simons does look a good option for the Reds, especially if he is able to kick on even more from what he’s shown already. If he is to move on this summer though, it is perhaps a deal that Liverpool might just have to admit defeat on, unless it can talk Leipzig down on the price.
