Liverpool vs Man United highlights and reaction as Harry Maguire scores late to secure huge win

Manchester United beat Liverpool at Anfield for the first time since 2016 with a 2-1 victory thanks to Harry Maguire’s late goal.

Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday.

Bryan Mbeumo got United off to a great start as he fired home in front of the Kop. Cody Gakpo hit the post three times and Bruno Fernandes also hit the woodwork in a back-and-forth game.

 

 

 

Gakpo’s luck changed late on as he tucked the ball home from close range. Both sides pushed for a winner and up stepped Harry Maguire. He leapt highest at the back post to bag all three points for United.

 

 

It is the first time United have won back-to-back league matches under Ruben Amorim since he joined in November last year.

FT LIV 1-2 MUN – Liverpool sent clear verdict over controversial decision

Liverpool supporters were left angered following the first goal as Alexis Mac Allister was down with a head injury. Normal protocal dictates that the game should have been stopped to treat the injury.

 

However, player continued and United scored. Mac Allister went on to be treated and received a ‘scrum cap’ for the remainder of the match.

 

Both sets of fans have now discovered why play was not stopped.

Speaking after the victory on Sky Sports, Maguire insisted that the victory over Liverpool was more than just three points. His header with six minutes of normal time remaining was the difference at Anfield.

 

He said

Yeah, it means everything. They have had the better of us over the last few years and it has not been good enough for our club and we don’t give our fans enough days like today

“Scousers rule the country, like we’ve always done before,” read the banner unfurled in the Kop before the game. Bryan Mbeumo was celebrating in front of Liverpool’s famous stand just a few minutes later. Mbeumo gestured with his arms, as if to say, ‘Are you not entertained?’.

 

Ruben Amorim had not won back-to-back league games before visiting Anfield on Sunday, but Manchester United won against Liverpool to get that monkey off Amorim’s back in remarkable fashion.

 

Amorim has been under immense pressure this season, yet he became the first United manager since Louis van Gaal in January 2016 to oversee a victory away at Anfield. The win could be a tenure-defining result.

Was playing the biggest game of his career at 23 and wasn’t intimidated by the Anfield atmosphere. He built on his confident debut and released pressure by sending goal kicks long. 8

Got his head onto everything in the first half. He is the only United player to play every single minute in the Premier League this season and he showed why at Anfield. 8

Amorim started Maguire because of his “experience” in big games and his ability to deal with crosses. Maguire didn’t let his manager down on his recall to the starting XI. 9

This has been the best 45 minutes of Amorim’s tenure so far. United just had another big chance from a set-piece and would have a two-goal advantage if they’d been more clinical. Hopefully that doesn’t come back to haunt them later in the game.

 

Mamardashvili has looked awful between the sticks for Liverpool and United must target him whenever they get a chance around the box.

That was nearly spectacular for United. Free kick taken by Fernandes, Gakpo lashes at it and it loops up and goes just over the crossbar. That would have been some own goal.

This game is as tasty as you would expect. Mbeumo unhappy he didn’t win a free kick, kicks out at Gakpo and escapes a booking.

Salah then tries his luck with a header and Lammens catches it.

First chance for Isak but he snatches at it. The ball trickles harmlessly wide.

Well that was nearly a second. A tackle falls straight to the path of Mbeumo and Mamardashvili does well to block him. The ball falls to Mount and somehow the Liverpool keeper is up to save his strike.

Just get the ball to Amad because he will make something happen in this vein of form. He assisted Mbeumo with a perfectly weighted pass and would have recorded another assist if Fernandes had buried that opportunity. The midfielder placed his hands on his head because he knew what a big chance it was. Liverpool have improved in the last 10 minutes, but they look gettable at the back.

 

United have been happy to counter-attack with purpose.

Wow what a chance that was. Cunha does well and the ball is worked out to Amad on the edge. He pulls it back and Fernandes clips the post.

Amad couldn’t block the pass, Gakpo cuts inside and fires one off the post – a warning for United.

Gakpo goes to cross and hits Amad on the arm in the area. Huge shout from the home fans. VAR says nothing doing and play continues.

That was excellent from United. Dalot robs Salah of possession in his own half and the counter was blistering.

 

Eventually it is worked out to Amad who switches it back to Dalot but he loses it. That was unlucky but some lovely football there from the visitors.

Whipped free kick finds Van Dijk at the back post free of Dalot. The defender is on the stretch and heads wide.

Anfield is furious with a few Michael Oliver decisions already. Casemiro has started really well – and that’s why he had to start. There have been groans at two misplaced passes by Liverpool and the home crowd are worked up after going behind.
