Liverpool are one of a number of clubs showing interest in signing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, with the Reds able to offer one small sweetener in what’s expected to be a tough transfer battle

Florian Wirtz has been linked with a move to Liverpool

Persuading one of Europe’s top players to join your team is always a challenge, no matter how prestigious your standing. However, Liverpool might have a cunning trick up their sleeve in their bid to lure Florian Wirtz to Anfield this summer.

Fans were left buzzing with excitement at the news that Arne Slot has shifted his focus towards the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder. At just 22 years old, Wirtz is considered one of the best attacking talents in Europe, with a price tag exceeding £120million.

While the newly crowned Premier League champions believe they can secure such a player, they are naturally bracing for fierce competition for his signature.

However, while Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also hot on the trail of the German star, Liverpool have a small incentive that could tip the balance in their favour: Wirtz’s former Leverkusen shirt number, 27.

Thanks to Darwin Nunez, who chose to switch from the 27 to nine a year after joining Liverpool, the jersey is now available, and it’s believed the number could hold some significance for Wirtz, reports the Liverpool Echo.
