Hello and welcome to our live Liverpool FC coverage on Thursday, August 21st. The Reds have under a fortnight to conclude their business in the summer transfer window – and it seems as though the Alexander Isak saga could go right to the wire.
Liverpool had a bid rejected for Isak but the Newcastle United striker is determined to get his dream move to Anfield. On Tuesday night, Isak finally spoke out amid the rampant transfer speculation in a statement uploaded to his Instagram account after he decided against attending the PFA Awards.
He spoke of ‘broken promises’ and ‘trust being lost’, meaning that his time at Newcastle ‘can’t continue’. The Magpies have since released their own statement on the situation.
Liverpool are determined not to be held to ransom by Newcastle’s £150m asking price and it remains to be seen if that stance will change in light of the latest developments.
Elsewhere, Harvey Elliott and Kostas Tsimikas face uncertain futures, while Ibrahima Konate’s future also needs to be resolved with the centre-back into the final year of his contract.
Stay with the ECHO’s Liverpool live blog for all the latest transfer rumours, news and opinion…
Key Events
Jeremie Frimpong injury blow
Arne Slot has confirmed that Jeremie Frimpong will be sidelined with a hamstring injury that he suffered in the win over Bournemouth last week.
The Liverpool head coach confirmed that Frimpong is expected to be sidelined until after the international break.
“The medical team were completely right about Jeremie to tell me that I had to take him off because he is out until the end of the international break and that happened during the game,” said Slot.
“I think I got criticised a bit for taking him off, didn’t I? I’ve already said it had nothing to do with how he played but we felt he had an issue with his hamstring and by we, I mean the medical staff.
“They were completely right. It was a good call to take him off otherwise he maybe would have been out for longer. We expect to have him back after the international break.”

Marc Guehi update
Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi continues to be linked with a move to Liverpool.
The defender has been included in the Palace starting line-up for the Conference League play-off clash against Fredrikstad.
Guehi’s inclusion has since led to questions about whether or not the defender would be able to compete in the Champions League if he was to move to Liverpool.

Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott stance
Ben Jacobs believes it is Liverpool’s preference to keep Harvey Elliott rather than sell him at this late stage in the summer.
The reporter explains that RB Leipzig are still in communication about the 22-year-old. The Reds would reluctantly sell him if the correct price is offered, but they are more than happy to keep him because he remains a valued squad player who gives his all to try and stake a claim to start every week.

Malick Fofana battle
Liverpool are one of many clubs have who been tied to Malick Fofana’s situation at Lyon in 2025. The 20-year-old completed his first season with the French club and has subsequently been linked with a host of Premier League sides.
The latest of those are Arsenal, as L’Equipe hint the Reds would have competition if they truly desired the Belgian talent. The Gunners are said to have added Fofana to their shortlist.

Alexander Isak £60m boost
According to The Express & Star, Wolves face a fight to keep striker Jorgen Strand Larsen from Newcastle United.
Talks have begun between intermediaries but the clubs are not in direct contact and will only hold negotiations if they believe they are getting closer to agreeing a fee. A deal could reach at least £60m.
If the Magpies are able to do business and secure other top target Yoane Wissa, it is widely reported this could help soften their stance towards selling Alexander Isak too Liverpool.

Harvey Elliott update
Harvey Elliott has not had any offers to leave Liverpool yet, report The Daily Mail.
Many clubs have registered interest though none have actually acted. RB Leipzig remain keen if they were to sell Xavi Simons, who is linked with Chelsea, whilst Crystal Palace have been linked too. They are about to sell Eberechi Eze to Arsenal.

Arne Slot on Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi
Arne Slot gave a typical answer when asked about Liverpool targets Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi just now at his pre-Newcastle press conference.
“What I can tell you, it’s not a lot,” the boss replied. “So, as I’ve said many times and shown, I could impact game with who we had on the bench, so it would be much nicer to talk about who we have but I understand.”
Speaking further about potential incomings before the summer transfer window closes on September 1, he added: “I don’t think it will be a busy couple of weeks in the window.
“That would mean I’m unhappy with the squad but I’m very happy. Having two for each position is ideal but I’d sooner have less than more as you’d have to disappoint a lot of people.
“But if there are players who can really make us better then the club has shown they can bring them in. But only if things are right – the right player, fee and position.”

Michael Owen on Liverpool signings
Michael Owen has given his thoughts on his former club’s transfer dealings this summer.
The Reds have spent around £300m to add Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Giovanni Leoni, and Freddie Woodman to their senior squad this summer. They’ve also completed deals for youngsters Armin Pecsi and Will Wright.
“It’s been incredibly exciting,” says Owen.

First images of Alexander Isak since statement
The first pictures of Alexander Isak have emerged since the striker accused Newcastle United of breaking promises behind the scenes.
The Liverpool transfer target was seen arriving for training on Thursday morning. Of course, he’s still training alone and not with Eddie Howe’s team whilst he feels his future is elsewhere.

Federico Chiesa staying
The Daily Mail also write this lunchtime that Federico Chiesa has held talks with Arne Slot to reaffirm his place at Liverpool.
The Italian scored his first Premier League goal on the opening night vs Bournemouth, which followed a summer of speculation over a return to Italy.
But Italian sources believe Chiesa is staying put before the window closes.

Alexander Isak transfer truth?
The Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele writes that the indication is Alexander Isak made his statement to Instagram on Tuesday night because he is upset he was not offered a new, improved contract last year when he had allegedly been promised one.
But an alternative angle suggested from ‘well placed circles, not connected to either club but familiar with the inner workings of the transfer industry’, is that Isak is actually upset at Newcastle United directly for rejecting Liverpool’s £110m offer earlier this month.
He was under the impression that £100m or more would be accepted.

Alexander Isak contract suggestion
Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol also believes there is a chance Alexander Isak could renew his contract with Newcastle United.
He believes if a transfer to Liverpool is not finalised before the deadline, the striker could make a tearful apology before returning to play for the club.
He doesn’t believe Isak will continue his absence from training or playing, and a new contract could help to resolve some of the issues they have fallen out over.

Alvarez transfer point
Good morning from the ECHO sports desk here in Merseyside.
Just a quick word on links with Liverpool and Newcastle United with Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid.
Part of the reason Alvarez left Manchester City is because he couldn’t settle properly in the North West and didn’t particularly enjoy living in England.
That, then, would seem to rule out a return to the Premier League.
Well, unless someone offers a load of money. Amazing what that can do to people…

Marc Guehi prediction
Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol predicts that Marc Guehi’s exit from Crystal Palace may be made easier if his team win big in Europe tonight.
Guehi is tipped to feature in the Eagles’ Europa Conference League play-off vs Norwegian outfit Fredrikstad at Selhurst Park. It will be a two-legged affair with the return leg taking place next Thursday.
But Solhekol believes if Guehi is able to help his current club into the UECL’s league phase by accumulating a giant aggregate scoreline from the first leg, he envisions Liverpool making a formal offer and Palace being more ameanable to the sale.

Divock Origi future
It’s often nice to keep an eye on former Anfield heroes, and recently there has been a story emerge about Divock Origi.
The Belgian striker’s career unfortunately hasn’t gone that well since he departed Anfield in 2022. He signed for AC Milan as a free agent, hasn’t made the desired impact there and could now be seeking an exit.
La Gazzetta dello Sport say Milan and Origi are close to terminating his contract one year before it is due to expire. He will lose around half his remaining wages to get out of the agreement early and continue his club career elsewhere.

Newcastle striker conundrum
Tied to Alexander Isak’s potential move to Liverpool has been Newcastle United’s own attempts to sign two strikers in his place and already-departed Callum Wilson’s place.
Sister site Chronicle Live reported yesterday the Magpies had launched a new £40m offer for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and were hopeful of striking an agreement before the window closes. Multiple outlets have since claimed this amount has been rejected, so still there is no movement on the striker front.
There is less than 11 days to complete deals this summer.

Ibrahima Konate contract
The fact Ibrahima Konate is well into the final year of his current Liverpool contract is well publicised.
And at present, there is no resolution in sight to that matter.
Renewal talks have took place over the summer and progress made, but no outcome. Meanwhile, reports are popping up with links to Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain as a free transfer.

Kostas Tsimikas latest
With Kostas Tsimikas one who could potentially depart Liverpool before the window closes, there has been an update from France.
Foot Mercato report from Marseille, who are managed by former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi.
It remains to be seen if a deal can be worked out in the remainder of the summer, otherwise the Greek international faces a battle with Milos Kerkez and Andy Robertson for game time.

Liverpool have the funds to sign Isak
According to The Athletic, Newcastle rejected a £110m bid for Alexander Isak from Liverpool at the start of this month. The report claims that while the Reds felt ‘an improved second bid would be futile’, they haven’t pursued a alternative target and they remain keen to secure the Swede’s signature.
It’s said that the Premier League champions have the funds to break the British transfer record to get Isak, having generated up to £220m from player sales this summer.

Alvarez regrets joining Atletico Madrid
According to the Spanish television programme El Chiringuito, as quoted by Sport, Julian Alvarez is unhappy at Atletico Madrid, and questions have been raised among his entourage about the decision to join Diego Simeone’s side.
“He has never been given the place he feels he deserves,” Alvarez’s representitives reportedly told El Chiringuito. “He is resigned and hurt because last season he scored almost 30 goals, but they placed him on the left winger to chase full-backs or substituted him at half-time.
“You can’t blame Simeone because he doesn’t know how to handle a star of world football. He’s not used to it, so it’s our fault for taking him there. We made a mistake to go and play for Simeone’s team.”

RB Leipzig want to sign Elliott
According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, RB Leipzig want to replace Xavi Simons, who’s set to join Chelsea following their clash against Bayern Munich on Friday night, with Harvey Elliott.
The report claims that the Bundesliga outfit has already agreed personal terms with the 22-year-old midfielder. It’s said that Liverpool will let the England youth international leave if they receive a ‘suitable offer’.

Isak yet to submit transfer request
According to The Athletic, Alexander Isak is yet to submit an official transfer request at Newcastle United. The 25-year-old striker faces an uncertain future at St. James’ Park, and he’s been linked with a move to Liverpool.
“If a player hands in a transfer request, then it can affect some of their loyalty bonuses in the contract and some of those can become void,” said Jibreel Tramboo, a sports law barrister at London legal firm 33 Bedford Row.
“I don’t think handing in a transfer request does much for a player in terms of negotiation. It has no real legal power. In practice, it’s a political tool, which is why you rarely see them anymore.”

Liverpool receive Guehi ‘boost’
Liverpool are yet to agree a fee with Crystal Palace for defender Marc Guehi, with the London club holding firm on their valuation depsite him having a year left to run on his deal.
That said, the latest update involving Arsenal’s shock move for Palace’s Eberechi Eze could work in Liverpool’s favour.
According to The Indepedent, Arsenal have reignited their interest in Palace’s talisman and it’s possible they could suggest defender Jakub Kiwior goes the other way as part of a deal.
Should Palace’s bolster their defensive options, it could pave the way for Liverpool to wrap up a deal for Guehi before the deadline.

Tsimikas interest
Ligue 1 side Marseille are interested in Liverpool defender Kostas Tsimikas, according to recent reports.
The Greece international has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield following tha arrival of Milos Kerkez this summer and hasn’t been included in the last two matchday squads as speculation over his future rumbles on.
According to Foot Mercato, Marseille are weighing up a move for the 29-year-old as his profile is a good fit for Roberto de Zerbi’s system. However, a move is far from guaranteed at this stage.

Guehi potential ‘ban’ explained as Liverpool transfer talks continue
Marc Guehi will be available to play for Liverpool in the Champions League should he make a move to Anfield – despite being poised to feature for Crystal Palace in Europe. Guehi will line up for Palace in their first-ever major European tie when they entertain Fredrisktad of Norway in their Conference League play-off first leg on Thursday evening, writes Ian Doyle.
Liverpool opened talks last week with Palace over a move for Guehi although it is believed the Londoners are currently asking far in excess of what the Reds are willing to offer for a player who has entered the last 12 months of his contract.
There had been fears among some Reds fans that by featuring in Europe for Palace, Guehi would be cup-tied for the Champions League opening stage should he make a move to Anfield.
