The international break is finally behind us, and what a blockbuster fixture to return with – Liverpool vs Manchester United at Anfield. Itās one of the biggest games in world football, and with both clubs coming off a turbulent few weeks, the stakes couldnāt be higher.
With both teams desperate for points, several football legends have given their take on what to expect – and most agree on one thing.
Wayne Rooney: “Liverpool canāt afford to lose again”
Speaking on his BBC show, Wayne Rooney, who famously played for Manchester United, believes Liverpoolās pride will kick in after their poor run.
“Just with Liverpool losing three games, I think that pride kicks in and the fans will know. The fans are not stupid; theyāll get behind the team and push them.
“For United, I think if they come away with a point, that would be huge. The pressure is on Liverpool, especially if they lose four in a row and to Manchester United at Anfield,” Rooney said
Rooney expects a reaction from Liverpool but thinks Amorimās men would see even a draw as a big success.
Chris Sutton: “Liverpoolās weakness could help United”
BBC pundit Chris Sutton, however, sees reasons for optimism in Unitedās camp. The former striker highlighted Liverpoolās defensive vulnerabilities.
“Liverpool have issues defensively, and their weakness at full-back might suit Unitedās tactics.
“My head is telling me that Amorimās side will get something at Anfield, but itās hard to back against Liverpool at home,” Sutton wrote in his BBC column.
Despite flirting with the idea of a draw, Sutton ultimately backed the Reds for a 2-1 win, predicting a hard-fought game.
Paul Merson: “Liverpool are a different beast at Anfield”
Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson expects Liverpool to bounce back in front of their home crowd.
“I thought Liverpool fully deserved to get beaten by Crystal Palace and Galatasaray. They must get back on track now.
“All three Liverpool defeats have come away from home, and now they return to Anfield. We all know Liverpool are a different beast there. Manchester United will be lucky to get something,” he said.
Merson predicts a 2-0 win for Liverpool, insisting Amorimās side still lack consistency away from home.
Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher agree: Liverpool win
Even rivals Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher, who rarely see eye to eye, are on the same page this time.
On The Overlap, Keane went for a 3-1 Liverpool victory, while Carragher, via Gary Neville, predicted 2-1 to Liverpool.
“Liverpool will have too much for United at Anfield. Theyāll respond. They always do here,” Keane said.
