Liverpool take on PSV Eindhoven on matchday five of the Champions League at Anfield. Arne Slot’s free-falling side have suffered eight defeats in their last 11 games across all competitions and find themselves sitting all the way down in 12th place in the Premier League table after six losses in seven, including Saturday’s abysmal 3-0 result at home to Nottingham Forest. In Europe they are 10th, winning three of their opening four matches.

They suffered a 1-0 loss at Galatasaray back in September, but have since beaten both Eintracht Frankfurt and Real Madrid. They won their opening game of the league phase narrowly, edging out Atletico Madrid 3-2 thanks to Virgil van Dijk’s late winner. Now they are out to stop the rot against a PSV team who currently top the Eredivisie by six points after a 1-0 win over NAC Breda at the weekend.

PSV’s Bosz: Wirtz the biggest talent I have ever seen

Florian Wirtz may be missing out for Liverpool again tonight due to injury, but the German star has still received the backing of Peter Bosz.

The PSV boss formerly coached Wirtz at Bayer Leverkusen and described him as the biggest talent he had ever seen who will make the grade at Anfield after his initial struggles following that blockbuster £116m summer transfer.

“He was 16 when he joined us. He was for the under-19 squad. They brought him in from Koln,” Bosz told TNT Sports this week.

“I remember it was Corona [COVID-19 pandemic] and I asked my sporting director, ‘how is the young kid doing?’ and he said ‘well, he’s doing really well’. I said ‘let him train with us’.

“He trained with us and I never let him go.

“This was, for me, the biggest talent I have ever seen. I’ve worked around with some really good talents but what I saw with him was incredible.

“Technically, perfect. Very intelligent. Good mentality.

“I played him as a right winger in the beginning but he did so good that I put him in his position, the 10 position, and never changed it.

“Those players, they always find the solutions what they have to do, where they have to progress and how to protect themselves and be able to play in the Premier League so I’m confident he will succeed.”

Slot: Liverpool have not lost ability to fight

Does Arne Slot believe that Liverpool have lost the ability to fight amid their nightmare domestic run?

“No, no we haven’t,” he said at his pre-PSV press conference on Tuesday. “But in moments of games we have lost too many duels.

“I think the last game we played we had 75 per cent possession, which means you only have to defend 25 per cent of the time and I think in and around our box we only had to defend four times.

“If I have to defend for half-an-hour I am in defend mode, so I just to throw myself at every ball, but when our defenders and maybe even including the goalkeeper are thinking about ball possession and then in the moment they have to defend we are not as switched on as we should be.”

Slot: Liverpool struggles are ‘ridiculous’

A candid Arne Slot said yesterday that Liverpool’s current situation was “ridiculous” and “unbelievable”.

He said he takes the responsibility for their results and performances, but insists they are working tirelessly to put things right.

“Ridiculous, almost,” he said. “Something I didn’t expect to be in, not at any club I worked at let alone if you are manager of Liverpool.

“That is unbelievable. It is unexpected for the club, for me, for everyone, but if you ever needed to face this maybe this is the best club to face it because the harder it gets the more we are together, the more we are trying to do the things Liverpool usually achieves.

“These situations, it’s not really nice is it? I can tell you that. To be honest, I didn’t expect myself to be in this situation with the way we go about it tactically and the quality of players we have.

“You would never have expected us to have lost so much. For sure I take the responsibility and feel guilty for it. We’re busy working on it.”

Liverpool vs PSV prediction

A win tonight would do preciously little to calm the major concerns over Liverpool’s dire and shocking league form, which captain Virgil van Dijk conceded this week had been a “mess” in another scathing assessment.

The abysmal home loss to a Nottingham Forest team already on their third manager of the season looking to escape the relegation zone was the worst of the lot, with the Reds looking totally and utterly devoid of any sort of confidence, cohesion or organisation.

Blip in Istanbul aside, the Champions League has been a welcome distraction for Liverpool so far this season and needs to remain the case on Wednesday, though PSV are certainly no pushovers – as Napoli found out to their cost not so long ago.

Dominant domestically, their performances in Europe so far have been rather inconsistent, though a positive result on Merseyside certainly isn’t beyond them.

However, we’re backing a Liverpool team no doubt showing a number of changes to produce a quick reaction from their weekend debacle.

PSV team news: Plea and Van Bommel out

PSV boss Peter Bosz remains without French forward Alassane Plea, who is not expected to return for a while yet after a serious knee injury sustained back in August.

Young winger Ruben van Bommel, son of former Netherlands midfielder Mark van Bommel, looks set to miss the rest of the season with his own knee injury suffered against rivals Ajax last month.

Otherwise PSV look to have a clean bill of health for tonight’s trip to Anfield.
