Elsewhere, Wolves have opened contract talks with striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, Andre Onana’s move to Turkey could scupper Manchester City’s plans, and interest in Tottenham remains despite the club insisting they are not for sale.

Liverpool are determined to keep Federico Chiesa and will not entertain any offers from clubs still able to do transfer business, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Besiktas have been linked with the Italian, with Turkish clubs able to sign players until September 12, but Liverpool are not willing to lose the ex-Juventus forward despite omitting him from their UEFA Champions League squad.

The Echo adds: “The attacker missed the club’s pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Japan while he dealt with a minor injury concern, which led to further speculation over his long-term future in late July.

“However, Chiesa has featured in all three of The Reds’ Premier League games so far, scoring a dramatic late goal in the 4-2 win over Bournemouth in the first game of new term.

“English football’s period for player trading closed last Monday at 7pm but clubs in Turkey have until September 12 to sign players and Istanbul-based Besiktas have been linked with Chiesa in recent days.

“The Turkish Super Lig side have reportedly held exploratory talks with Anfield chiefs over the 27-year-old. But Liverpool are determined to retain the 27-year-old.”

Wolves open Strand Larsen contract talks

Wolverhampton Wanderers have opened negotiations with striker Jorgen Strand Larsen over a new contract after the club rejected Newcastle United’s advances in the summer transfer window, the Telegraph reports.

Newcastle had looked to add Strand Larsen to their ranks but saw offers of £50m and £55m turned down.

The Telegraph adds: “Wolves were intent on offering Strand Larsen a new deal after the window closed and talks have now been initiated with the player’s representatives.

“It is understood that Wolves are unlikely to include a release clause in the fresh terms. Wolves did negotiate a £62.5m clause with Matheus Cunha earlier this year, with the Brazil international signing for Manchester United, but this is regarded as a more straightforward development.”

Onana deal scuppers Ortega’s City exit

Andre Onana’s expected loan move to Trabzonspor from Manchester United could end the prospect of Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega leaving until at least January, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Ortega was also linked with Trabzonspor, while other options are no longer available for the goalkeeper, who had been expected to leave after falling down the pecking order at City.

The MEN adds: “City paid £27 million to sign James Trafford from Burnley in July. When City matched Newcastle’s bid for the 22-year-old, the plan was for the former academy youngster to challenge Ederson, with Ortega departing.

“But Ederson’s own exit to Fenerbahce led to City signing Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain for £26 million. Donnarumma and Trafford are now competing to be No. 1 under Pep Guardiola.

“Ortega’s departure was complicated by an injury to third-choice Marcus Bettinelli. This meant the German was on the bench on the opening day of the season at Wolves and was part of the squad against Tottenham and Brighton despite not being among the substitutes.”

Staveley still keen on Spurs

Amanda Staveley’s consortium are still interested in buying Tottenham Hotspur despite the club’s current owners ENIC stressing they are not for sale, The i Paper reports.

Staveley’s PCP International Finance Limited and a rival consortium both made approaches following the departure of Spurs chair Daniel Levy last week, and though they were rebuffed the saga may not be over.

The i Paper adds: “Sources suggested to The i Paper that the interest remains, with the intention of monitoring the situation before deciding on whether to make a new proposal in 2026.

“Staveley is an experienced dealmaker and tapped up Middle East finance to broker Newcastle United’s takeover by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia nearly four years ago.

“But this largely US-backed consortium, which is made up of multiple investors and has the backing of UBS Investment Bank, does not involve any money from the Gulf and there is no Qatari investment involved.

“It is understood that there is concrete interest in buying the club from Qatar but they are yet to show their hand.

“Sources told The i Paper the Staveley proposal is potentially ‘ready to go’ but there remains significant uncertainty about what happens next and whether ENIC would countenance a sale.”
