’ Manchester United flop to Anfield  Liverpool had considered Antony as a potential replacement for Salah, should he depart.

Antony’s agent has revealed the truth on Liverpool’s reported interest in the Manchester United star, before Mohamed Salah’s decision to sign a new contract in 2022.

Salah is out of contract at the end of the season and can hold transfer talks with foreign clubs as early as January. There was speculation about his future back in 2022 before the Egyptian opted to pen a new contract.

It was reported by The Times earlier this week that Liverpool had considered Antony as a potential replacement for Salah, should he depart. The Brazilian was at Ajax at the time, before his big-money move to United which has ultimately not paid of.

Indeed, Junior Pedroso, Antony’s agent, has now verified the claims in an interview with winwin.com, saying “Yes, this story has a basis in truth. No (negotiations stopped as), Salah renewed his contract at the time with Liverpool, and that made Anthony’s move to Liverpool impossible.”

Since then, Salah has rocketed his goal tally for Liverpool, scoring a remarkable 65 times. Just this season under Arne Slot, he’s netted 10 times, pushing his total up to an impressive 221 since his transfer back in 2017 from Roma.

On the other hand, Anthony has struggled to find his feet since his move from Ajax to Old Trafford. The winger has only managed to score five goals and provide three assists in his 56 Premier League appearances so far.

The 24-year-old has only made two appearances this season for a struggling United side, who parted ways with Erik ten Hag in late October and have since appointed Ruben Amorim as his successor.

Salah will hope to continue his excellent form when Liverpool returns to action against Southampton on Sunday, with Slot’s men sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League.
