Sporting CP are still not accepting the final details of a proposal made by Arsenal for Viktor Gyokeres, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Arsenal have strengthened in key positions, but it is crucial that they add reinforcements to their forward line in the coming weeks and months. The north London club have been crying out for a natural centre-forward for a few years now, and that could be the next signing they bring through the door if all goes to plan.

Speaking on his YouTube channel on Monday afternoon, Romano confirmed that Arsenal made contact with Sporting last night to try and close a deal for Gyokeres. As it stands, Sporting aren’t willing to accept Arsenal’s latest proposal, with the Gunners wanting to pay in the region of £56m fixed fee, plus add-ons…

“There was a new contact last night between Arsenal and Sporting to try to accelerate and close the deal on the transfer fee package, and so club to club with Sporting, but Sporting and their president, Frederico Varandas are still not accepting the final details of the proposal made by Arsenal. It doesn’t mean that it’s over, but obviously, I don’t want to give you a feeling of a negative update, but it’s part of the negotiation. So yesterday, there was a new club-to-club contact, and Sporting are insisting on €70m fixed fee, while Arsenal were starting at €65m plus add-ons. Sporting want €76m, so that’s the position of the club.”

Romano reported on Sunday that Arsenal were advancing in talks to sign Gyokeres this summer. Shortly after, The Athletic’s David Ornstein confirmed that the Swedish striker has agreed a five-year deal to make the move to the Emirates Stadium, so he’s clearly keen to return to England during the window.

It feels like a matter of when, not if, Gyokeres joins Arsenal, with just the fee needing to be agreed upon with Sporting. Looking at the figures involved, it appears the Gunners aren’t too far away.
