Wirtz was heavily linked with a move away from Leverkusen for several months before he went on to join Liverpool. Bayern were interested in signing the 22-year-old, while Manchester City were also mentioned as a potential destination.

More than month on from the deal being completed, Bayern chief Hoeneß has explained how the Bundesliga giants did have an interest in Wirtz and why a move was not likely to happen.

“We’re very satisfied at FC Bayern,” Hoeneß told Sport1’s DOPA. “We are the real winners of the summer transfer window. We have a strong team and didn’t need to strengthen it much.

“Of course, we would have liked to have Florian Wirtz, but we’d never have bought him for €150million (£130million).

We offered €55million (£47.7million) for Nick Woltemade, while Stuttgart wanted €75 million (£65million). In the end, he went to Newcastle for €90m (£78million).

“What Newcastle are doing has nothing to do with football. It’s like Monopoly these days”
