Arne Slot has been thrown under the bus by a number of his star players at Liverpool with growing calls for him to be sacked at the end of the season.
Liverpool lost 4-0 to Man City last time out as they were eliminated from the FA Cup, and will face a confident Paris Saint-Germain side next in the Champions League.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk have failed to step up in the face of a difficult season.

Brown told Football Insider on 6 April that Slot is on the ropes at Liverpool with pressure mounting and a growing feeling his position is under threat.
However, the boss is not to blame for all of the Reds’ issues this season, as his players have failed to show the level of performances they did last season.

There is a feeling that the manager’s dismissal should largely be blamed on his players who have failed to perform unless they pick up their form in the closing stages.
“Slot has been thrown under the bus at Liverpool,” Brown told Football Insider.
“Look through the squad, how many of them can you say have really performed to their top level? But it’s the manager who picks up the bill for it.
“He’s been badly let down by a number of his senior players.
“Van Dijk has got a brilliant reputation which has been well-earned, but he hasn’t performed anywhere close to his usual standard this season.
“Salah as well, we’ve spoken about him a number of times and the fact he’s dropped off.
“Then looking through the team, you’ve got players like Ibrahima Konate for example who again has been nowhere near the level required of him.
“So all of these things start to add up, but eventually it’s the manager who has to deal with it when results aren’t going their way.
“If Slot does get sacked by Liverpool, the players are just as much to blame as anything else.”
When could Liverpool decide to sack Slot?
Football Insider exclusively revealed on 6 April that Liverpool may be forced to sack Slot as a result of his increasingly toxic relationship with the fans.
However, no decision is expected to be made in the immediate future, and they will instead wait until the end of the season to see how the remaining games pan out.

PSG are on a high ahead of their Champions League clash following their 8-2 aggregate thrashing of Chelsea, while the Premier League table remains tight.
Liverpool are currently in fifth place, but with just three points separating them from eighth, they are at risk of missing out on qualification for Europe’s premier competition.
Should they fail to reach the Champions League, sources say Liverpool will likely sack Slot, as he will have fallen short on all of their ambitions.

Alexander Isak could be about to haunt Luis Enrique and PSG as the Liverpool star jets out to France with his teammates.
Arne Slot has confirmed that, while the Sweden international is not fit enough to start, the centre-forward could feature at the Parc des Princes, which will be a huge boost for the Reds.
At the same time, Enrique and his players might be rethinking their strategy because, although the striker is returning from a fractured leg, his threat in the final third cannot be underestimated.
Liverpool take on PSG in the Champions League quarter-finals first leg on Wednesday, 8 April, with Hugo Ekitike and Mohamed Salah expected to lead the line. Slot’s bench is set to be a strong one, though.

Alexander Isak has a history with PSG
Isak could feature for the first time since December, when he had his leg broken by a sliding Micky van de Ven in the process of scoring against Tottenham before the Christmas break.
Luckily for the Reds, he has made an incredible recovery, just in time for the PSG clash, and his previous displays against the Ligue 1 giants will be remembered by everyone at the Parc des Princes.
During his time at Newcastle United, the Sweden international faced them twice in the 2023-24 Champions League group stage, with the Magpies winning once and drawing once.

Liverpool face a huge task to reach the Champions League last four after a humbling 2-0 defeat to holders Paris Saint-Germain in their quarter-final first leg at the Parc des Princes.
Desire Doue scored a deflected opener and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia punished poor defending to add a brilliantly-taken second in a one-sided contest in Paris as Liverpool were condemned to a fourth consecutive away defeat for the first time since April 2012.
“When we pressed them high we were ripped apart,” Arne Slot said in his press conference. “The second half of the game for us was more about surviving.”
The margin of defeat would have been greater if not for some wasteful Paris Saint-Germain finishing and good goalkeeping from Giorgi Mamardashvili, who made saves from Doue, Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele and Achraf Hakimi as the hosts dominated.

Luis Enrique’s side were also aggrieved not to be awarded at least one penalty, with VAR overturning the referee’s decision to penalise Ibrahima Konate for a foul on Warren Zaire-Emery, then opting not to penalise the defender for a push on Nuno Mendes.

Having been the subject of much criticism after the Reds’ FA Cup thrashing by Manchester City last weekend, the Egyptian was omitted from the starting XI to face PSG four days later, with Jeremie Frimpong instead preferred on the right in a wing-back
However, despite the Merseysiders trailing 2-0 from the 65th minute onwards, our third-highest scorer of all time wasn’t called upon at any stage to try and make an impact off the bench.
Slot explains why he didn’t bring Salah off the bench
In his post-match press conference, Slot was asked why he didn’t deploy Salah even when Liverpool were losing and in need of a goal to give themselves a foothold in the tie.
The head coach explained (via liverpoolfc.com): “I think in the last part of the game, it was more about surviving for us than there was ever a chance that we could score. You never know, because last season we scored five minutes before the end, Harvey Elliott [scored] when I took Mo off.
“I think this was a 20, 25 minutes where we were only defending and Mo has so much quality, but for Mo to be 20, 25 minutes defending inside his own box, I think it’s better for him to save his energy for a lot of games that are coming up in the upcoming weeks.”

Surely it would’ve been worth giving Salah some minutes?
That Slot attributed Salah’s no-show last night to Liverpool being in survival mode speaks volumes of the Reds’ mindset in Paris, with the final quarter of the game viewed as damaged limitation rather than seeking an opportunity to halve the deficit and set up a finely-poised second leg at Anfield next week.
We get the argument for not being excessively gung-ho against a PSG side who can rip apart the best teams in Europe, and it’d be fair to say that the Egyptian winger has been enduring a miserable season by his own exceptional standards.
However, it was still surprising that he wasn’t given some bit of game-time off the bench at the Parc des Princes. Even if he’d had just a quarter of an hour on the pitch, he might still have conjured up one moment of decisive brilliance for his team.
Instead, with Slot choosing to hold him back for upcoming fixtures, he’s basically putting the onus on Salah to deliver against Fulham on Saturday if – as seems likely, juding by the Dutchman’s remarks – the 33-year-old is restored to the starting XI.
Even 12 months ago, it would’ve been inconceivable that our number 11 would’ve been left on the bench by choice with Liverpool losing in a Champions League quarter-final.
Despite his loss of form since last summer, it’s still mind-boggling that he played no part last night, instead being left to undergo some post-match drills in order to maintain sharpness for upcoming games.
