Road Diogo Jota’s Car Crashed on Described as ‘One of the Worst in Spain’

Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota – alongside his younger brother and Penafiel footballer Andre Silva – have died in a fatal car crash and the road where they tragically crashed in Zamora has been previously described as ‘one of the worst’ in Spain.
Gondomar-born Jota, 28 years of age, was enjoying his off-season break, fresh off the back of winning the Premier League title, in northern Spain and was returning to the UK just two weeks after marrying his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso, in his hometown of Porto.
His car, a Lamborghini, went off-road after a flat tyre occurred while overtaking on the A-52 at Cernadilla, which is close to the border with Portugal. Emergency services announced the two fatalities in the early hours of Thursday morning.
“From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene,” they said about the sad loss of Liverpool’s forward and his brother.

Jota’s Crash Was on Dangerous Road in Spain
In 2020 alone, 15,000 drivers picked up speeding fines on A-52
The road on which the crash occurred, however, has a damning reputation for being very dangerous – and is well-renowned in the local area for being an area of ‘irresponsible driving’, as reported by La Opinion de Zamora via Mail Online.
To put it into perspective: in 2020 alone, the Spanish publication reported that the road chalked up nearly 15,000 speeding fines.
Just four years ago, a campaign was launched. That campaign looked to tackle, and therefore alleviate, the speeding issue at hand as it planned to bring awareness to the zones where speeding is commonplace and where crashes occur.
As a result, the A-52 – thanks to its sharp turns and the frequent wildlife crossings – is labelled as one of the worst to drive on. A recent poll by Spain’s Organisation of Users and Consumers proved just that, as drivers are under the assumption that A-52 is among the worst routes in the entirety of Spain.
Those who took part in the poll raised concerns over the road’s overall condition, as well as its lack of safety barriers. A total of 1,259 drivers took part – and they also expressed worries about the ‘excessive amount of roadworks’, too.
Zamora, where the tragic crash happened, is renowned for its uneven, rugged terrain. What also doesn’t help is that the A-52 runs through mountainous areas of northern Spain with fog and limited lighting are current issues among drivers on the
Despite its obvious drawbacks, the road is often taken by drivers as a means of driving to the ports of Santander or Bilbao. Jota, returning from recent lung surgery, was heading back to England to return to camp and get ready for the 2025/26 campaign.
As reported by The Metro, Jota – and his brother, who played in Portugal’s second tier – were advised by medics not to fly following the former’s surgery and so they, instead, were driving to Santander to board a ferry when his tyre blew out. CNN Portugal’s Rui Laura said:
“The surgery he had was lung surgery and he had been advised against flying following this. He was on his way to the northern Spanish port city of Santander to cross the ferry and reach the UK that way and carry on with the car once he reached Britain.”
